I completely agree with Lord Stevens, assisted suicide is not as medical treatment. Doctors have no business in being involved in this and the state should not coerce them to do this. As doctors we have a duty to prevent suicide. We have a duty to provide high quality palliative care and to treat depression. As for the argument that the proposed legislation is not a slippery slope. The scope of such legislation has expanded in many countries (Canada, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands). We heard from Baroness Gerada yesterday, suggesting that every doctor must be trained in referring patients for assisted suicide. The slippery slope is ready and waiting.
Dan Hitchens@ddhitchens

Lord Stevens, former CEO of NHS England, says defining AS as a treatment would be incoherent, and could undermine conscience protections: “The professional duties on a doctor are potentially in play… It will give rise to questions of the obligations on a doctor to raise [AS].”

British agency owners are in San Francisco this w/end for a Men Having Babies conference where agencies, lawyers and doctors gather - there’s even a software supplier. #surrogacy is undeniably a global trade built on womens bodies, with business opportunities in every corner.

Tom Gordon: there's a case in Spain where religious groups are backing a father in challenging their daughter's application. What do you think of that? Paul: not sure on relevance. On funding...issue where appealing have to rely on legal aid, so poor families can't appeal but rich families can.

When Spain introduced “assisted dying” in 2021, the Humanists applauded, calling on UK MPs to “play close attention to the example set by Spain”. Those “assisted dying” laws have just killed Noelia. I, too, want UK MPs to pay close attention. humanists.uk/2021/03/18/spa….

This weekend, I will be speaking at Oxford with @bindelj ! Not as an academic. As a child born through surrogacy. A child separated from her mother at birth. My surrogate mother once told me: “If I had held you one last time, I wouldn’t have let you go.” This is not a story. It is a $200 billion industry. We are translating my book into English to bring this testimony into the language of global decision-making. We need your help to make this happen.

This is a key point. If assisting death is defined in law as “medical treatment“ all doctors and healthcare professionals will be obliged to participate in it- or face regulatory consequences. The GMC is already revising their guidance. Consultation is open until June.

In 2016, a Dutch "doctor" named Marinou Arends forcefully administered euthanasia to a 74 year old woman with Alzheimer's disease. The patient reportedly refused three times. The "doctor" did it anyway. She was acquitted of murder by a court in the Hague in 2019. Outrageous.

We need a public inquiry into the BBC. They have deliberately tried to downplay how a mentally ill victim of gang migrant rape was pushed into euthanasia.

This week, in Spain, a rape victim was killed by the state. A young woman in pain and despair was offered not love or justice but death. The government’s solution to her suffering was not to wrap its arms of care around her but to give her lethal drugs so that she would die. It sounds like a scene from a dystopic novel but this is reality under the regime of euthanasia so many states have embraced. ✍️ Brendan O’Neill Article | spectator.com/article/theres…
