Pope Leo XIV has denounced the “colonization” of Africa’s mineral wealth and warned against the “lust for power” as he arrived in Equatorial Guinea on the final leg of his African tour. Speaking in the capital, Malabo, after meeting President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo — Africa’s longest-serving leader — the pontiff criticized a global economic system driven by profit at the expense of people and justice. “Such an economy kills,” the Pope said, linking the rise in armed conflicts to the exploitation of oil and mineral resources without regard for international law or the rights of local populations. His remarks come in a country rich in oil and natural resources, yet where more than half of the population lives in poverty. Critics have long accused the ruling elite of benefiting disproportionately from the country’s wealth. Despite the strong message, the Pope stopped short of directly naming corruption in Equatorial Guinea. Instead, he called on leaders to reject the pursuit of unjust wealth and to embrace values rooted in justice, dignity, and the common good. Large crowds gathered to welcome the pontiff — the first papal visit to the country since Pope John Paul II in 1982 — with many expressing hope that his presence could inspire change. Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue his visit with engagements including meetings with civil society, as well as visits to a psychiatric hospital and a prison, before concluding his trip on April 23. #MMINews
