@JHCPAL There are loads of them up here now, lots of trees at the back of our house and around the fields and we see them all the time in the garden.They are in NorthShields, in Marden Quarry, Saltwell Park, Holywell Dene.

There was one on the farm about 25 years ago. On a hill. In Nth Tyneside. It survived a winter ! Use to sit at the kitchen window. Must have escaped from an aviary. One day it turned up & had lost a leg ! It lived a good bit longer. Was around for about 18 months in total.

London now has tens of thousands of bright green parakeets, spreading to new areas every year. They were never native to Britain. So how did they end up here? Most likely, they escaped or were released from captivity decades ago. Since then, they’ve adapted remarkably well to London’s parks and suburbs, helped by mild winters and abundant food. To some, they add colour and character to the city, to others, they are seen as an invasive species. Have they reached your area yet?

@JHCPAL I hear 'spelk' lots. I would always say 'spelk' instead of 'splinter'. Teenagers still say 'spelk' in the north-east. It hasn't died out.

The word that started me off. A big language account said it was obsolete. No I thought & off I went. The word that always provokes a response. The one that, based on 2 years doing this, is THE word that identifies a region & the people from it - however far-flung. 🧵

Every now and then you get an image that just wows yourself, found another adder on my way to photograph Dippers and as it was basking in the sun it yawned 😮 couldn't believe my luck, all day I've being saying to myself "I can't believe I've just got that shot"

James Amour, back shift Overman at New Hartley Colliery in January 1862. Trapped underground along with his 14 year old son & 197 others until they died from carbon monoxide poisoning. James held a prayer meeting underground whilst waiting to be rescued. We know this as he scratched details on a tin that was found with his body. This pre-1862 picture is one of the earliest if not the earliest photo known of a colliery official.
