This isn’t me saying they would be worse somehow but there is a lot more toxic fandom behavior you can parody and write about now, on some level Eltingville is almost an introduction to how bad it could be

@Exalted_Speed It's not the contrarianism I mind! The thing is when you engage in the hardcore fanbases for these specific franchises, the continual persecution complex has become a little grating when I'd the sentiment has moved in their direction as the years have progressed

I like oshii, but one of the reasons I think fans grew ambivalent towards him is the fact that many of these franchises have good material not by him but his name carry a power with critics that make it so sometimes that’s the only work from these franchises that gets talked on.

Oshii is marching a furious comeback...It's funny how he's been a defining feature of three different franchises (UY/Patlabor/GITS) but there's a portion of the fanbases for each of them that have been ambivalent toward his contributions. It's going to happen again with Votoms

@erstatiz Nah I think it’s better that way. Because if you can’t handle a little contrarianism you sometimes get stuck in bad habits. Oisii is one of the biggest voice in anime and is like the third director most people know after Miyazaki. Like it’s not going to be a mainstream view

@Exalted_Speed I was just more sympathetic of this viewpoint (and believed it myself!) a decade ago. And it's one thing to believe this but it's another to rag on Oshii's contributions and the fans of it which people really seen to be fond of doing these days.

@Exalted_Speed I think it’s the near obsession with BEING dark that gets me. Why does it HAVE to be so dark all the time, it feels just as creatively stagnant as doing endless comedies.

The reason a lot of projects go edgy or horror is because they can’t really do those job in the mainstream, they have to answer to being a kids show or network standards so are often forced to very safe work, when you can’t be dark in the mainstream you have to be in indie
