Great to be back at @Georgetown University discussing how to mobilize capital for growth in LAC. Unlocking the region’s potential requires strong public–private collaboration, better policy frameworks, and conditions that enable investment at scale. At @the_IDB, we continue working to bridge policy and markets to drive #Productivity and #Investment.

Across both discussions, one message was consistent: growth in small economies will not come from scale alone, but from #productivity, smarter policy frameworks, and the ability to attract and mobilize private investment. At the IDB, we remain committed to supporting these efforts—through financing, knowledge, and partnerships—to help countries turn structural constraints into opportunities for sustainable #growth.

In the panel on economic growth in island nations, the discussion broadened to the structural constraints these countries face—limited scale, exposure to shocks, and high costs—and the need to translate ocean-based assets into engines of growth. From @the_IDB's experience in Latin America and the Caribbean, three priorities stand out: → Strengthening the business environment to reduce costs and enable firms to compete → Addressing coordination and market failures, including access to finance and hashtag#innovation → Investing in skills and infrastructure to build productive, resilient sectors ⬇️

The path forward is clear. Strengthening resilience requires: → Diversifying beyond traditional models toward higher value-added segments such as wellness, cultural, and nature-based tourism → Deepening linkages with local economies so that more value is retained domestically → Investing in sustainable infrastructure that protects natural and cultural assets while enabling growth Ultimately, sustainable tourism depends on effective collaboration between the public and private sectors, where governments set the right frameworks and firms drive innovation and execution. ⬇️

Good to engage at the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit (CTIS) in London, organized by Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (@CWEICofficial), on two critical discussions for small and island economies. At the roundtable on sustainable tourism, we reflected on a central challenge: how to move from volume to value. For many countries, particularly in the Caribbean, #tourism is not just a sector but a core pillar of economic activity, accounting for a significant share of GDP, employment, and exports. ⬇️

Durante la visita, también sostuvimos intercambios con autoridades de Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay. El diagnóstico es compartido: reducir fricciones en frontera es una condición necesaria para mejorar la competitividad y avanzar en la integración comercial. El siguiente paso es escalar. Pasar de proyectos puntuales a soluciones conectadas a nivel regional. En esa línea, estamos impulsando iniciativas como Cargo Pass, un programa regional enfocado en modernizar la #Logística a lo largo del Corredor del Pacífico —por donde circula cerca del 90% de la carga de Centroamérica— reduciendo tiempos en frontera, mejorando la trazabilidad y fortaleciendo la coordinación entre países. Desde @el_BID, seguiremos acompañando a los países con conocimiento técnico, aprendizaje acumulado y capacidad de implementación para avanzar en esta agenda. Porque hoy, la competitividad también se juega en la frontera.

El caso de Peñas Blancas es ilustrativo. A partir de un enfoque integral, basado en procesos, infraestructura y tecnología, se han logrado reducciones sustantivas en tiempos de cruce, mayor capacidad operativa y un control más inteligente de la carga. Es evidencia de que es posible facilitar el #Comercio y fortalecer el control al mismo tiempo. Estos resultados responden a la implementación de modelos como la Gestión Coordinada de Fronteras (GCF), que permite integrar instituciones, optimizar operaciones y avanzar hacia una gestión más digital, basada en datos y en análisis de riesgo.

Esta semana visitamos el Centro de Control Fronterizo de Peñas Blancas, en Costa Rica, junto a autoridades de América Latina y el Caribe. Más que una visita técnica, fue una oportunidad para observar algo concreto: cuando las fronteras se modernizan correctamente, dejan de ser un cuello de botella y se convierten en plataformas de #Competitividad. Este tipo de avances se enmarca en el impulso de iniciativas regionales como América en el Centro y Conexión Sur, y en el liderazgo técnico del equipo de #Productividad y comercio de @el_BID para llevar estas soluciones a escala. ⬇️
