@crush_crime For a prison population of 500,000 We would need, on current staffing (which is problematically low) 100,000 more prison officers. And each prison place costs about £48,000 per year. That would be an extra £20bn cost. Not impossible but neither easy nor quick to implement

@crush_crime That's a formidable logistical issue and a very costly one. Governments always pay lip service to criminal justice but the level of investment tells a different story about priorities

@RnaudBertrand Obvs not all stabbings are fatal but for context there were about 110 homicides in London last year and 70 of those were with a sharp instrument . That doesn't mean it isn't an issue but this is wild exaggeration

This is actually hilarious. China has 2 stabbings attacks recently - two - and the FT is doing a whole piece on the "crime wave" that's overtaking the country, how that reveals deep issues in China, bla bla bla. Meanwhile in London alone last year there were 12,786 stabbings. A subject, I checked, that the FT hasn't written a single article about in 6 years (even though it's their own country)...

Various claims being made about crime trends in London since 2016. Here I've prepared two charts of indexed monthly data looking at knife crime and gun crime trends relative to May 2016. The #knifecrime data tells a mixed story: overall numbers up since 2016, but injuries down.
