Anaesthesia Assistants (AAs) in the USA, in their first year, are paid more than some Consultant Anaesthetists in the UK 3x as much as residents. Wild.

@Dr_Done_ The US AA scheme is a lot more regulated than the 🤡🎪 that has been allowed to quietly sneak under the radar here Anyone claiming equivalence is an idiot

Outsourcing to private firms while the NHS cleans up the mess is absurd. Taxpayers pay twice, yet real capacity isn’t built. Cherry-picking easier cases leaves the NHS overstretched and managing complications. Fund and fix the NHS properly. mirror.co.uk/news/health/pr…

The @lengreview was commissioned by @wesstreeting Amongst several things, it identified that PA education was insufficient to see & treat undifferentiated and complex patients. A ~year on, Streeting still hasn’t implemented the recommendations, despite patient harm & deaths 1/

@bswud The supervising consultants should be struck off too. They knowingly placed patients in harms way and are responsible for this debacle. It is a disgrace.

- there is only ONE nurse in Europe allowed to perform ERCP (usually carried out only by specially trained surgeons), in Rotherham in England - this nurse regularly introduced himself as ‘a consultant interventional radiologist’ to patients, obfuscating the fact he’s a consultant NURSE - even his supervising surgeons were not themselves trained in ERCP as it’s so specialised! - in one case he continued with surgery despite the supervising doctor instructing him to stop - he made mistakes dosing sedatives and I n the procedure itself, leading to the death or harm of at least 68 patients Doctors wanting to perform ERCP must pass rigorous speciality exams and enter special training programmes under close supervision. Why do we have lesser standards for nurses? Patients must now routinely ask their ‘doctors’ if they are actually doctors if they want proper care in the uk!
Wigglytuff@nursewigglytuff

There is continuing discussion around the harm caused to patients by the nurse consultant-led ERCP service at @RotherhamNHS_FT between 2016-21. I believe its lessons must transform our understanding of patient safety and 'advanced practice'. A thread follows👇🧵(1/15)

@dave43law The NHS has ITU, blood transfusion facilities, on call anaesthetists on site 24/7. How many privately-funded healthcare establishments have ever had this?

Doctor substitution is as cynical as it is illogical & only worked for so long as the public didn’t know! Now the regulator, the government & ESPECIALLY the Colleges need to explain playing fast & loose with peoples’ health Those of us calling this out never were the problem!

@anaesthetic_spr @nhsswipecard A follow up FOI is needed re rationale/justification/minutes of discussion to support these decisions of equivalence. Bet they don’t exist, exposing total irrelevance of these statements.

Prof Jim Parle rallying the troops 1) All Drs have MORE 'generalist' training than any PA. 2) RCGP says there is no role for PAs in GP 3) You state on B.Uni website that you want people who don't want to be Drs. You also cannot have a 'medical career' without a medical degree

So I have questions: 1️⃣ what’s being done about the apparent clinical & corporate probity issues here? 2️⃣ where’s the named supervising consultant in all this? 3️⃣ when will someone sensible address the clear, obvious & on-going problem of no enforced scope for assistants?

Exclusive on physician associate scandal Whistleblowers claim the investigation into a PA's botched lumbar puncture at Royal Gwent hospital was marked as "closed" two months ago It's alleged that a meaningful probe only began after we revealed the patient's traumatic experience

Credit to @ConorGogarty and @WalesOnline for pursuing this. @AneurinBevanUHB allowed their physician associates to perform invasive procedures on patients, including chest drains, central lines and nerve blocks. It was only a matter of time until a patient came to harm.

@alexander_minh I'd like to know how consent was obtained for this procedure It's a slam dunk that the introduction went along the lines of "hi, I'm XXXX and I'll be doing your LP today" with "I'm one of the team" as an each way bet

Posting like this as it hides his id. The mental gymnastics involved. AAs are not medically trained. They can't prescribe. It is not 'looking down' to uphold patient safety and standards, no matter how reasonable you sound as you tie yourself in knots

Realistic and reasonable about what the country can afford?!😂 You’re paying assistants to doctors more than you’re pay doctors; Day one pay in central London: 🔸Newly qualified Doctor: £20.36 / hour 🔹Newly qualified Physician’s Assistant: £28.86 / hour That’s 41.75% more.
Wes Streeting@wesstreeting

As the latest round of unnecessary strikes come to an end, I have written to the BMA Resident Doctors Committee asking to meet the whole committee. It’s time for the BMA to be realistic and reasonable about what the country and the NHS can afford.
