It might be getting chillier out there but there are plenty of good finds to be had if you know where to look! Another brilliant walk out there with one fossil hunter even finding this beautiful fossilised shark's tooth, a real rarity on our beaches!

Thanks to everyone who helped to build our Carboniferous tree at Otley Science Festival yesterday! We had a great time talking with people about some of the wonderful fossils that can be found around in t' hills around Otley. Hope to see you all again next year!

Spotting fossils in the limestone of the Yorkshire Dales can be tricky due to all the lichens. A great place to look, however, is in stream beds! Check out these lovely little corals and crinoid stems we saw near Grassington #FossilFriday

Sometimes Mother Nature does the prep work for you! This Siphonodendron coral was collected from a stream near Appletreewick in the Yorkshire Dales. The slightly acidic water has preferentially dissolved the limestone matrix, exposing the coral beautifully! #FossilFriday

The rocks you can find here represent an old oceanic piece of crust that’s been obducted onto the continental crust during the Caledonian orogeny - I have a wee trip planned here for next Wednesday if anyone’s interested that involves looking at these rocks - scottishgeologist.co.uk/store/p/ballan… You can either get a ticket that includes transport from Glasgow or meet us there.
