Catastrophe in Aberystwyth where the marvellous sign for the Starling Cloud has been replaced by truly abysmal lettering only. Absolute disgrace. If you tolerate this, your children will be next. #PubSignThursday

One for Pier Review - the pier fanzine I'm never going to produce. Penarth. Lovely structure. Opened 1898. 220m in length. Art Deco pavilion. One of only seven that survive in Wales. Views to the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm in the Bristol Channel and across to Brean Down.

Merthyr 1-2 @ChesterFC Only Exeter and Plymouth away can eclipse tonight for getting soaked on the away end but, boy, you can't beat the ecstasy of a Iast minute winner!

Merthyr Town 1-2 Chester - National League North. Att: 1,104 (away c.120) Up the head of the Valleys to Penydarren Park for a night of relentless whispering sheets of drizzle riding in the wind. Suffering the weather made the glorious last gasp winner taste all the sweeter.

@markjones45sw Funnily enough I was thinking just that earlier. Would have been horrific in today's deluge! Enjoyed my trip. Nice exploring somewhere unfamiliar!

Pub Sign of the Week: Aneurin Bevan, Cardiff. Proper pub signage seen yesterday. Either the former Labour Health Minster has given a batsman out or he's arguing illness is not an indulgence but a misfortune, the cost of which should be shared by the community. #PubSignThursday

@InghamKeith @ChesterFC Nice one! Did the Merthyr youth come after you? They had to lock the Wetherspoon's door to stop them getting at us post-match. Just added to the enjoyment!

@blacon_blue Tantalising I've seen an old photo of the Wing Half with Joe Mercer clearly on it. A crop reveals very little detail. Annoyingly they later showed a depiction of a rugby player missing the point of the pub being named after a hero local footballer.

Pub Sign of the Week: The Sportsman, Eaglescliffe. If you collected bubble gum football cards in the 1970s, you should recognise this as Middlesbrough striker John Hickson. There should be more famous footballers (or parochial ones) on signs. Who knows of any? #PubSignThursday

Ye Olde Murenger, Newport Finally ticked off this Sam Smith's pub. It didn't disappoint. Mobile phones allowed too yet still a civilised, harmonious atmosphere. You can't beat a high-backed settle.

Old Arcade, Cardiff. One of two CAMRA Historic Pub Interiors in the capital. Victorian back bar is the main feature but a lovely pub all round! Plenty of entertaining rugby union paraphernalia on the walls.

@GBbooze A good while since my last visit. I remember it for excellent local ale and several mangy lurchers with indigestion issues. Thought it was great!

The Three Stags' Heads, Wardlow Mires, #Derbyshire 🍻 A quaint 300-year-old pub with two small rooms, stone-flagged floors and low ceilings. The moorland section past the pub was the haunt of local highwayman Black Harry, who was hanged opposite the pub.

The Ship & Shovell, Craven Passage, Charing Cross, #London 🍻 It may be unique for consisting of two separate buildings on either side of a street, connected underground by a shared cellar. Until 1998 it was two separate pubs (The Shovell and The Ship)

Pub Sign of the Week: Lifeboat Tavern, Sea Palling, Norfolk. There is hope! Excellent new signage at this surfer style beach bar. Unveiled in 2025 and painted by a local artist. Easily the best sign I saw from a pleasant five day sojourn on the Norfolk coast. #PubSignThursday

Pub Sign of the Week: Builders Arms, Darlington. An annoying lack of apostrophe but nonetheless quality signage from the early 1980's in County Durham. Eee, they don't make 'em like that anymore. #PubSignThursday

Pub Sign of the Week: Yr Heliwr, Nefyn. A proper pictorial pub sign at this excellent community owned pub. Vastly superior to the charmless monotone minimalist corporate rubbish that dominates nowadays. #PubSignThursday
