@FlightQ Comments following the latest challenge- When trying to choose a flight with a layover, you cannot know if it's with the same airline or 2 airlines until after selection? And layover duration only counts when they're not within the selected flight? Else a very fun game!

@JonathanLandolt The logic should be physically touching so Malaysia and Singapore should be counted. I’ll fix that as well. Feel free to reach out whenever you spot any bugs there are places in the system so it’s not unheard of for mistakes!

@FlightQ Aw, darn. Any way you can add a "save" feature? It was nice to be able to submit a "good enough" attempt to avoid having to memorise it and then reattempt new routes.

@Spookyload @ThunderCrate6 @eagledynamics If you look at the other images that were published, I believe the probe is angled to the right of the aircraft. Similar to what is done on other aircraft (like the Rafale), to expressly avoid it being in the middle of the hud. If not, I agree it would be annoying.

Japanese television is warning people in northern Japan that there is a very serious risk of a 3-meter tsunami hitting the coast very soon. People living on the coast are being warned to evacuate their houses immediately and head to somewhere safe.

@justinsoliz @realmikeglynn Of course, there was also ETOPS which didnt exist early on. Nowadays, with modern engines, the cost of an additional engine outweighs the efficiency loss in terms of overall operating cost. Hence why most are 2 engine aircraft (see A340 vs A330 as an example).

@justinsoliz @realmikeglynn A lot of nuances but, 1 key item is you need to be resilient to 1 engine failing i.e. on a 2 engine aircraft, maintain flight on 1. if flight = 100%, you need 200% total thrust. With 3 engines, flight on 2 (150% total thrust). Means you can improve efficiency in the design.

I'll start by saying that investigations take months if not years to establish causal factors. I'm not claiming I know what happened - that's for NTSB to solve. That said, there's small detail, captured in photo #6 of the report that gives possible insight into UPS 2976. ⬇️ The preliminary report confirms what many of us suspected based on the debris field. Namely, that the engine #1 pylon failed and that the nacelle and debris from it flew upwards and over the fuselage of the aircraft, coming to rest on the starboard side of the jet's path of flight and the western side of rwy 17R, opposite the side of the engine's location. As some have pointed out, the loss of one engine would not necessary cause the loss of the aircraft, as MD-11 like other trijets is engineered to suffer an engine failure and maintain appropriate climb performance. That being said, if debris or foreign objects from an uncontained engine failure or separation of the motor entered any of the other engines, it would be quite possible for that engine to suffer a compressor stall at the least or failure from foreign object debris (FOD) injection. The sixth screen capture shown in the NTSB report shows what appears to be a flame near the vertical stabilizer, separate and distinct from the flames emanating from the port wing where the #1 engine separated. It's possible, that what the camera captured is flames of a compressor stall. I've circled it in red in the photo here. If FOD ingestion of the #2 motor caused loss of power, then none of the forecasted climb performance could be in any way met. This is just pointing out a detail I noticed while reading the report - it is in no ways claiming I know what occurred. The pros will determine those details in due course. The final NTSB report will tell the story of what happened following the separation of the #1 motor. They'll give us the answer to what really happened. Until then, respect for the brave UPS crew who fought this and flew it to the end. Pray for them, the victims on the ground, and all their families and coworkers. RIP.

@RenatoChem @Aviation_Intel My initial guess by rebuilding the aircraft and based on available imagery was ~135ft wingspan. Seems like those images were accurate enough for the front and top of the aircraft. The trailing edge kink needs to be moved inward based on the flap position. twitter.com/JonathanLandol…
