There is a very big difference between a person’s constitutional right to own a firearm and not have that right infringed upon by the state, and voluntarily choosing not to bring one in exchange for attending an event. You’re trying to draw a comparison between two things that aren’t equivalent. You chose to attend an event knowing that entry is conditioned on not bringing a firearm. No one is forcing you to attend. That is fundamentally different from the government restricting a constitutional right, especially in public spaces. Now when you attend a private event, you would hope that the organizers have security in place to proactively secure the venue and keep attendees safe. When you’re out in public or at home, however, the responsibility for your immediate safety falls on you. Law enforcement does its best to protect the public, but a lot can happen between the time you call 911 and the time officers arrive. Also, at the majority of events I go to around the state, I know plenty of people who are carrying, so I’m not sure what events you’re referring to.

I always find it interesting that when attending any republican political event or going to a professional sports competition, security won't allows guns in. I keep telling them that the guns aren't the issue and they are wrong for forcing gun control. But they keep looking at my like I'm confused…

For all of the people who are trying to use this to push for gun control, you are not only wrong but sick. Gun control would not have stopped this. The suspect robbing someone, with or without a gun, is still a crime in and of itself. That said, making owning a firearm a crime would not stop criminals; they already have or plan on breaking the law. If criminals do not already respect the laws we have now, who in their right mind thinks they will start after we enact more gun control? That said, more crimes are prevented each year using a firearm than are committed with a firearm. “According to academic estimates, defensive gun uses — including when guns are simply shown to deter a crime — are four to five times more common than gun crimes” (docs.house.gov/meetings/JU/JU…

23-year-old Brett Scrogham, who was shot in the parking garage near the Convention Center on Thursday, has died from his injuries. Brett was a friend of mine and an amazing, intelligent, godly young man with a bright future ahead of him. As such I avoided commenting on the situation until the details became public. He was downtown to attend an Indians game with his family and was a victim of senseless, tragic violence. Please pray for his family. Those with surveillance cameras in the area should contact IMPD's Homicide Unit at 317-327-3275. Those with anonymous tips should contact 317-262-TIPS (8477). I spoke with the individual that first reported this to IMPD earlier this weekend. This individual was on the third floor of the parking garage and heard a loud gunshot, followed immediately by a possible suspect running down the ramp of the garage from a higher level. The possible suspect stopped and looked at the individual, then continued running down the ramp. The individual described the possible suspect as tall, skinny, younger male wearing a black MTV sweater, a black hood, and other black clothing.

Also, with as many guns as there are out there on the streets illegally right now, how do you plan on getting them off the streets if you did ban guns? You have a registry of all those who have legally purchased guns, so you know who to go to and take them from, but you don’t have a list of those who have them illegally. Will you stand on the side of the street and say, “Hey everyone, bring me your guns”? Because I’m sure those who commit crimes are not going to line up and hand them over.

You know crimes happen with or without guns, right? All I’m saying is that when crimes do take place, I would rather be able to defend myself with a weapon of equal lethality to that of the person attacking or robbing me. I don’t think you’ll find many people who, if they’re being honest, would rather have a butter knife or pepper spray than a firearm when they’re being attacked by someone with a gun.

@wolfofwarsh @clayboycarti_ Again, I point to the fact that more crimes are prevented through the lawful use of firearms than are committed with firearms. You can refer to the source I provided in the original post.

@KYLE_Mattern44 @clayboycarti_ I just know that you make laws to make it easier to get guns. Then you complain when crime goes up. Then you make even more laws for easier gun ownership. Then crime goes up again so then you make even more laws to get easier access for guns...but then crime again. It's endless

NEW: The Carmel mayor goes to social media and joined me LIVE this morning saying, "enough is enough." She said a man with a long criminal history should have been in jail, but instead 'injured a victim and terrorized a family." I just obtained the court documents detailing the case Mayor Sue Finkam was drawing attention to. 31-year-old Manuel Ettress faces 26 news charges including robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, kidnapping while hijacking a vehicle, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and driving while intoxicated. Ettress is accused of carjacking a victim at the GetGo in Carmel in the 11500 Block of Illinois Street at 10:23PM on Tuesday night.  A man was helping his daughter put air in her tire when police say Ettress jumped into the driver's seat of the car with his daughter still inside. The father yelled for his daughter to get out while he tried to fight Ettress off and out of the car.   According to the probable cause, the daughter kicked Ettress in the face 10 times and got out.  The father was hit with the driver's door, dragged to the ground while Ettress is accused of crashing into the gas pump, speeding off leaving the victim on the ground injured.  The victim was taken to the hospital for surgery with four broken bones in his arm and open wounds on his hands, arms, and legs. He needed two plates and 13 screws.  Minutes after Ettress sped off police say he crashed into a house in the 12800 block of Fleetwood Drive South and took off again but was quickly found walking in the area with a clear glass pipe with burnt ends with a copper scouring pad. Police say Ettress was driving with a suspended license.  I have been looking through 14 pages and more than 30 cases against Ettress. Most cases are for level 6 felony thefts out of Marion County. He was most recently transferred from the Marion County Jail on a GPS monitor and sent to Monroe County to answer to theft charges there.   After going before a judge in Hancock County, he was released from jail, but I am still trying to determine under what type of monitoring if any. Here is my interview this morning with Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam on her frustration with "repeat offenders cycling through the system." One correction in the interview I said Ettress had a Carmel address, but that address is an emergency contact. He Carmel EMS he had been staying in shelters. Ettress goess before a Hamilton County Judge today at 1.  fox59.com/video/carmel-m…

@wolfofwarsh @clayboycarti_ Even in a world with increased gun control, what stops criminals from stealing guns? They obviously don’t care about the law already, so I don’t think they’ll care about breaking another one.

People who go around shooting other people don’t care if guns are banned or not, and they definitely wouldn’t follow your asinine law. People who rob others and commit violent crimes do not care if owning guns is against the law because, news flash, they are already going to commit a crime what does unlawful possession of a firearm mean to them. They already don’t care about the law anyway. All this would do is make it so that more law-abiding citizens would not have a firearm to protect themselves. Do you think a criminal is more or less likely to try and rob someone if they think there is a chance that person also has a firearm? “According to academic estimates, defensive gun uses — including when guns are simply shown to deter a crime — are four to five times more common than gun crimes.” (docs.house.gov/meetings/JU/JU…)

@BenJustJamin13 instead of banning guns there should be a law requiring all gun owners to shoot themselves at least once with each gun they own. add it to the protocol for purchasing a firearm.

Tragic and infuriating. Like many families who occasionally take in an Indians game, we can't stop thinking about how something so wholesome was turned into tragedy. If families don't feel safe from random violence downtown at 6 PM on a Thursday, our capital will fall apart. This is not normal. This is not acceptable. And it does NOT have to be our future.
