The Texas Quote of the Day: "Because the beer kept sliding off my fiddle!" ---- Aubrey "Moon" Mullican, "King of the Hillbilly Piano Players," when asked why he chose the piano and not another instrument. Moon, who was born in rural Polk County near Moscow, Texas, got his nickname "Moon" for his habit of playing all night long and sleeping during the day. He was a raucous, fun-loving, hard-driving boogie-woogie pianist whose style merged swing, blues, honky-tonk, Cajun, ragtime, pop, and country music. "We gotta play music that'll make them beer bottles bounce on the table," Moon once said. His influence was enormous: I read an interview with Jerry Lee Lewis in which Jerry Lee said that, once he saw Moon play, he knew the direction his own style needed to go. If you listen to Marcia Ball or any one of dozens of boogie-woogie piano players like her, you're listenting to Moon, indirectly.
