Executive Mansion, Washington, D.C. November 21, 1864 Dear Madam, I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom. Yours, very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln

"Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God." For more than a century, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been a hallowed space among hallowed spaces inside Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, D.C. For most of that time, sentinels from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as the "Old Guard," have guarded the tomb 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, rain or shine. The Old Guard's meticulous routine includes pacing back and forth in front of the tomb, taking 21 steps north and south, and standing for periods of 21 seconds at either side. The number 21 symbolizes the 21-gun salute, the highest ceremonial honor for veterans and members of the military. Guards are either relieved every hour or half-hour, depending on the time of year, in an elaborate ceremony called the Changing of the Guard. In May 2015, PBS News producer Justin Scuiletti shot and produced this video, showing a complete Changing of the Guard ceremony edited together from three different ceremonies on the same day.

Powerful closing piece from @charliecbs & CBS Weekend News team. Remembering America’s fallen heroes, as well as two @CBSNews colleagues who died 20 years ago while on assignment in Iraq.
CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil@CBSEveningNews

A monument honoring America's fallen heroes is growing along a trail just south of West Point Academy. The towering memorial is made up of stones that bear the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On this Memorial Day we remember the heroism of Lakeside Unit No 4, the first military expeditionary unit to enter WWI. They were the first unit in the country called to the battlefield. Their mission was to set up a hospital unit in France and they came from Cleveland Ohio. 🇺🇸

The image depicts Katherine Cathey, the pregnant widow of U.S. Marine 2nd Lt. James “Jim” Cathey, lying on an air mattress on the floor in front of her husband’s flag-draped casket the night before his burial. A Marine honor guard stands vigil in the background. Jim Cathey was tragically killed in action in Iraq in August 2005. Overcome with grief, Katherine refused to leave her husband’s casket. She requested to spend one final night with him. Two Marines went to great lengths to provide her with a makeshift bed, using a mattress and pillows on the floor. One Marine stood guard over her and the casket throughout the night. This powerful and Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph was captured by Todd Heisler in 2005 as part of his series “Jim Comes Home” for the Rocky Mountain News.

@ScottJenningsKY Scott, I’m relieved that Trump is not giving the Iranians money for nothing. Any word on if the U.S. will be providing them chicks for free?

I will never understand how the United States military has watched the Ukraine war and was so impossibly unprepared for Iran’s drones. It borders on the failure of Task Force Smith to be prepared for the Korean War.
Tymofiy Mylovanov@Mylovanov

Petraeus: The U.S. has not remotely learned the lessons it should from Ukraine. This is the future of war: Ukraine alone uses 10,000 drones a day, and 90% of Russian casualties are caused by drones. That should force institutional change. 1/

On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives for this country that we love. It is a debt we can never fully repay, but we must never stop trying. I’ll always be grateful to our fallen heroes and their families, whose sacrifice reminds us of what it means to live for something greater than ourselves.
