@MethembeThomas How about if you let a 19 year old beat you, you need to have a chat with yourself? Knowing it can be done with 200k and can be profitable. Econet clearly can’t see it. I don’t look at Econet as an innovative company. They seized to be a long time ago.

This week, @SwoopAppNG, a food delivery app with super-app ambitions, announced a $7.3M seed round. It's expanding from Eswatini — where it claims to have become the country's largest e-commerce platform with 22k users (~2% of the country's population) — to Nigeria, Africa's most populous country with an estimated population of ~220M. The company's led by a 19-year-old Berkeley dropout and Thiel Fellow from Greenwich, Connecticut. And notably, all investors in the round are Silicon Valley-based — except South Africa's Base Capital. Swoop's strategy: low restaurant commissions (for now), flat 7% "handling fee," and letting riders keep 100% of delivery fees — forcing @Chowdeck and other incumbents to compete or lose their supply side. It's drawing premature comparisons to @WaveSenegal's disruption of mobile money in Francophone Africa and @OPay_NG's early blitzscaling across verticals before the pivot to payments. But perhaps the precedent to keep top of mind is Jumia Food — which exited food delivery in Nigeria & other markets, citing competitive dynamics that were "irrational" and expected to stay that way. "There will always be someone new coming into play." — @Jumia_Group CEO Francis Dufay (December 2023)

@gama_stanley i once raised that the psl does little to nothing to monetize and actual generate income from the social media, i was ignored for a while but then we started to see games live streamed on youtube, better but still we arent moving in over drive to get all the value from digital.

When I agreed with Scottland owner, Scott Sakupwanya that there is need to increase sponsorship and prize winnings for clubs in the Premier League, thousands of pple engaged in the debate. Pple expressed diffident views and a huge number supported Scott’s views. I still stand by my viewpoint that the Premier League must do something to increase prize money for the clubs. A number of clubs then phoned me and I also I did a little investigation on how much clubs are spending per month to sustain their teams. Clubs like CAPS United, Scottland, Hardrock, FC Platinum, Mwos, Dynamos, Highlanders, Ngezi and Herentals spend a minimum US80k per month on salaries, winning bonuses and running costs. Other clubs use a minimum US$50k a month. One argument was that clubs should get money from TV rights and sponsorships. But in Zimbabwe TV rights are virtually non existent. There is no money to be derived from TV rights. Sponsorship is minimum. Sponsorship at clubs is not good enough and therefore prize money has to go a long way in helping the clubs sustain their operations. You can’t compare our league with that of the English Premiership whose clubs for example are guaranteed at least USD120m just for getting promotion from the Championship league. So at the end of it all Scott was point on and many pple agreed with his views. What also needs to be understood is that of the US$3 million sponsorship from Delta how much of it do the clubs benefit. Let’s put me money into our clubs.

@MethembeThomas Why does Econet need to do everything? We need to stop looking at others to do things and look to ourselves. Anyone can raise 200k easy if the numbers make sense.

Dairibord Zimbabwe Limited reported FY2025 volume growth of 12% and revenue growth of 8%. Operating profit came in at USD 2.5 million (excluding unrealized foreign exchange gains, sale of scrap, and other non recurring events found in other incomes), while return on invested capital (ROIC) was around 3.3 percent, well below the estimated cost of capital of 15.25%. External estimates such as GuruFocus place historical WACC for Dairibord at 10.5%. Since FY2009, revenue indexed to 100 has increased to 316 in FY2025 (see chart below), representing cumulative growth of 216%. Over the eleven USD comparable years, excluding the ZWL hyperinflation period, return on invested capital averaged 3.7%, implying a persistent and significant shortfall relative to the cost of capital. Performance between FY2013 and FY2017 illustrates the underlying issue. Revenue remained within a narrow USD 93 million to USD 103 million range, while returns deteriorated, reaching negative 9.0% in FY2016. Across the USD comparable period, returns exceeded the cost of capital only in FY2010 and FY2011. The FY2025 outcome reinforces the pattern. Despite continued top line expansion, ROIC remain below the investment hurdle, indicating limited conversion of growth into economic value. The business has failed to establishe sufficient pricing power within its product mix to support margin expansion alongside volume growth. Of the six acquisitions completed between 1998 and 2008, only one delivered acceptable returns. A detailed report examining the company’s acquisition record and its inability to translate volume and revenue growth into value creation will be published shortly. Follow this account @SMRI_Institute for further updates.

@MethembeThomas Monopolies are not good for business. Econet would be a pretty decent company if they had competition. They once were a leading telecoms company on the continent. They can do it again. But they need competition like MTN or Vodacom to keep them on their toes.
