Nandipha Magudumana’s Mother Dies While She Remains Behind Bars Dr Nandipha Magudumana, the celebrity medical practitioner awaiting trial on multiple charges linked to the notorious prison escape of her boyfriend Thabo Bester, is mourning the sudden death of her mother, according to Sunday World. Nokuzola Sikeleni passed away on Thursday in Port Shepstone on KwaZulu-Natal’s south coast. Prison authorities and social workers at the Bizzah Makhate Correctional Centre in Kroonstad informed Magudumana of the loss, leaving her “taken aback” and struggling to come to terms with the news, according to her family. Her brother, Nkosinathi Sikeleni, told Sunday World, “Nandipha was informed by the prison bosses and social workers about our mother’s passing… She is trying to come to terms with the loss of our mother, and we are hoping that she will be strong even though it is painful.” The family has already begun the process of applying for compassionate leave so she can attend the funeral. Magudumana’s father, Zolile Sikeleni, expressed quiet sorrow while making funeral arrangements. “It is sad that she died while their child was languishing in jail,” he told Sunday World. The 38-year-old doctor faces a raft of charges including aiding Bester’s escape from prison, fraud, corruption, money laundering, violation of a corpse, arson and defeating the ends of justice. She was arrested with Bester in Tanzania in April 2023 and extradited to South Africa. Magudumana’s lawyer, Machini Motloung, has requested that prison officials provide her with psychological support. A Department of Correctional Services spokesperson confirmed that compassionate leave for bereaved inmates is permitted under the Correctional Services Act, but each application is assessed on risk, security and behavioural factors. A close family friend described the situation as heartbreaking: “It is sad to be incarcerated and fail to bury your loved ones.” Funeral preparations are under way as the family awaits the department’s decision on whether Magudumana will be granted temporary release to say goodbye to her mother.
