I’ve started a GoFundMe to build a Digital Twin of Toronto – yep, that’s right, an ultra-realistic, fully interactive, 3D version of the city! Think of it as Toronto in the metaverse, where anyone can virtually explore, plan, and play with the future of our city. My Story: Architect Turned XR (Extended Reality) Nerd I’ve spent years designing real-world spaces, but now I’m diving headfirst into the digital universe. I’m combining my architectural chops with cutting-edge XR tech (Unreal Engine, Oculus, you name it) to recreate the entire city of Toronto in a virtual space. Picture this: real estate developers, architects, city planners, and even YOU, virtually strolling through futuristic developments or simulating new city plans before they even happen. Oh, and it’s not just for pros – anyone can use it! Why Does This Matter? Toronto’s growing FAST. With that growth come challenges like sustainable development, infrastructure planning, and making sure the city remains inclusive. This digital twin will be a game-changer for the city’s future. Imagine being able to walk through new construction projects before they’re built, seeing how new roads might affect traffic, or even watching how a park redesign could impact the environment in real-time! The possibilities are endless: whether you're a city planner, product designer, or just someone who loves Toronto, this tool will make you feel like you have a hand in shaping the future. Why I Need Your Help I may be a solo architect-turned-XR-developer, but this project is BIG. Like, bigger than a moose in a Toronto snowstorm. I’m talking about expensive software, VR headsets, servers for all that fancy data, and ideally, some extra hands to speed things up. And that’s where you come in! By donating to this GoFundMe, you’re not just funding a dream project – you’re helping create a digital Toronto where innovation thrives, decisions are data-driven, and the community comes together to shape the city's future. The Roadmap (a.k.a. How Your Money Will Help Us Get There) Here’s what your donations will unlock: $10,000: Realistic weather simulations. Yes, even the legendary Toronto snowstorms. $25,000: Stream part of the model online so anyone can check it out. $45,000: Bring on a part-time developer to get into AR/VR and pixel streaming – making it even cooler. $60,000: Stream even larger sections of the city for everyone to access. $75,000: Another XR dev joins the team for extra awesomeness. $100,000: Connect parts of the model to blockchain tech, opening up some crazy new features (think digital ownership of virtual spaces!). Over $100,000? We’ll unlock even more epic features and new possibilities. What’s Been Happening So Far? Here’s where things get real exciting: I just tested a section of the city model on the Quest 3 VR headset, and it was a SUCCESS! 🎉 Sure, there are some limits to the polygon count (we’re pushing those pixels), but walking through Toronto in VR is wild. Imagine developers, architects, and construction managers being able to “step inside” their projects before they even break ground. Next up, I’m looking at showcasing Toronto’s TTC station in VR, with bigger plans for working with companies like Bentley, Buildner, and Dezeen.
