Hmm...Artist Development isn't dead; we're just doing it wrong. It hasn't evolved with the times like everything else. Artists have become more resourceful in modern times, and labels aren't meeting them at 0 anymore, but instead, at 45-50% as far as signing potential goes.

I'm incredibly excited about tomorrow night's panel. So many new events and cultural productions are being born in our scene. They need to live, and branding becomes an emotional and visual entry point. It signals who belongs, what the energy is, and what the event stands for.

When people say “support your favorite creatives!” it often implies that creatives are charity cases, art is a hobby and not labor, the audience is doing the artist a favor. I hate it.

There's a chapter in my book where I speak about how lonely entrepreneurship can feel when you're surrounded by people who can't relate to it, people with more predictable routines, those who can participate in the communal payday celebrations.
