I'm putting the final touches on a new article on Pathological Democracy, where I discuss how the act of voting itself creates partisanship, reinforced by subsequent voting and resulting in the construction of parallel realities of cognitive dissonance - psychological pain caused by a misalignment between past and present actions or beliefs. I think it will explain a lot of the ongoing "MAGA Civil War" re: Iran. I dug into both US and international data regarding partisanship formation, polarisation, and dissonance ranging from the 1940s to the modern day. The is almost zero evidence that voters vote for any reason other than "vibes" and adopt policy positions post-facto. They will forget any information that contradicts their behavioural voting commitments, even directly after reading information on the subject. A shocking percentage of voters, both in the US and worldwide, have absolutely zero idea what policy positions the politicians they vote for hold. Over a third of Americans didn't even know Bush was to the right of Clinton. This seems, I believe, intentional as a dissonance-avoidance strategy. If you know nothing, or forget everything - which for example 11% of Brits did regarding the positions of Labour and the Tories on integration with the European Community did in 1997 - then you can never feel the psychic pain caused by cognitive dissonance. This phenomenon has absolutely no left-right relationship because it is not a function of ideology, but rather a product of the democratic process itself. It is a uniform finding across nations and decades. Very excited to present this and will publish it as soon as I'm home and able to add in the appropriate chats/graphs.

23 major news outlets, including The New York Times and USA Today, are now blocking the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine from saving copies of their articles. They are doing this because they do not want AI companies to use the archived pages to train large language models. This surely protects their content from scraping, it also limits public access to historical news records. It makes it harder to track how stories change over time and preserving journalism
