After Professor Gaunt had left, she turned her attention back to the shelves. The books immediately caught her eye. She stepped closer to the first shelf and ran her fingers along the spines of the old volumes. Dust settled on her skin as she read the titles—some faded, others embossed in gold, some in languages she didn’t immediately recognize. Finally, she carefully pulled one out. The book was heavy and creaked softly as she opened it. The pages were yellowed and densely covered with old handwriting. Lena leafed through it slowly, her gaze resting on diagrams, marginal notes, and hand-drawn sketches. She leaned slightly against the shelf, completely absorbed. After a while, she closed the book again, brushed some dust off the cover, and carefully put it back in its place. But she didn’t leave. Instead, she walked further along the shelf, pulled out another book—this one was slightly narrower, but just as old. Finally, she sat down on the edge of an old table nearby, opened it, and began to read. Down here, time seemed to pass more slowly. And as the light from the chandeliers fell on the pages, Lena lost herself deeper and deeper in the forgotten books of the Undercroft.
