@akazeeox Yeah, said on #MOTD they are using 50fps for the analysis, and you can see it with the blurred images they use to measure. Equally, players on the near side of the pitch have better image resolution than those on the far side, so it’s not consistent across the width of the pitch!

@ProfRobt Are the cameras doing the check running at 50fps though? It'd make sense to have dedicated goal-line cameras running at a much higher speed for just such an issue. And, bearing in mind accuracy is better (and there's more money in PL footie), why don't they use Hawk-Eye instead?

2/3 #VARdebate. using cameras at 50 frames per sec, when feasibly a player or the ball can be moving at 5 meters per sec, means 1 frame = 10cm difference between frames. This could at both the measurement of the ball being kicked and the player who may be offside, so 20cm total.

#VARdebate... (PS: I’m a #spurs fan too, and agree they should definitely not have disallowed that goal by #sheffieldunited yesterday). #VAR simply isn’t capable of measuring to that fine degree of accuracy, so it’s not 100% objective on tight decisions. #MOTD #MOTD2

There are easier languages to teach and learn, but if you want to work for Waves or someone similar these are deal breakers - this job looks pretty fun :)

An OSS developer myself, I think part of an educator’s responsibility is to maximally prepare students for their careers, where proprietary tools are often relevant. Commercial SW makes things possible OSS doesn’t, and vice versa.
