I bought A LOT of great new albums in 2025. It was tough but I narrowed them down here tomy favorite 10 (with 5 honorable mentions). Could’ve easily done a top 20 with 10 honorables this year….

I’ve not hung here lately, but 2025 was such a great year for music I wanted to spread some joy with a playlist of my 66 favorite songs of the year. (Wanted to narrow to 50 but couldn’t). If you don’t know these, check them out: open.spotify.com/playlist/7ceKP…

@sotachetan I hadn’t known anything about them before this year so they were great surprises. Saya released a SAYA DEMO MIXTAPE on bandcamp recently that I’m excited to check out.

@ProfessorPower2 Props for Saya & The Tubs, excellent records both

@batcountry1980 Only version I ever listen to. Love it.

Let It Be is such a strange album. There’s not actually a definitive version of it. Phil Spector’s 1970 album is basically a mix, with added instrumentation, and the original album sleeve even stops short of calling him the producer and it’s not like he sat in the studio with the four of them and worked on it. Glyn Johns mix that was released as Get Back on the Let It Be boxset is excellent, though it’s easy to see why it wasn’t released at the time. Too ragged, too rough sounding, and there are some odd song choices on there. For me, this is the one I reach for when I want to hear these songs. Song selections, spot on. Sequencing, perfect. Mixes, sublime. Hearing these versions of Long And Winding Road and Let It Be it becomes obvious which Macca pushed for this project to happen. The intros and ad libs are missing, but the more polished sound brings it in line with the rest of the catalogue. And it’s got Don’t Let Me Down on it, a song that’s just too good to be a B-Side.

@JefePil I can’t take the possibility of another Chefs-Iggles Super Bowl.
English

@JefePil Would be interesting to recalculate without stand-alone games.

@tasteslikemus1c And I know you know these, but don’t forget the Guess Who’s two “wheat” albums and Poco’s “Pickin Up The Pieces”
English

@tasteslikemus1c Have you heard the debut self-titled album by Audience? Tuneful and interesting.

I don’t think I’ll be on this platform much longer. If you’re a mutual with a bluesky account, please drop it below so I can follow you there. My handle there is @michaeljkane.bsky.social

@tasteslikemus1c Congrats! The guitar hook is super catchy. Will it be available for download, say via Bandcamp?

Wow. I never saw CSNY go this hard. Tom Jones is turned to 11 from jump &, perhaps in response, Stills becomes a man possessed. Crosby-Nash barely contain their joy. If only they’d stayed this together, this hungry. What could’ve been.

It's always wild stumbling across Pitchfork reviews from the old days.

@tasteslikemus1c Did they all read this amateurish as well?
