@FlagAndFire While Mom might be pushing it a bit, I see more good parenting here than abuse. Growth does not take place if we continually operate in our safe zone. In order to grow we have to push just beyond what we think we can do.

@FlagAndFire I can see what Mom is doing. Mom never left her child’s side, never let her child be put in a life threatening situation. Mom let child engage in a productive struggle. The child will emerge stronger, smarter and more aware of the potential danger in that pool and what to do.

Is this child abuse or good parenting? I'm siding with abuse.

IMO too much travel ball at young age 9y and up. Too much volume of throwing too early:practice,games,lessons. Parents have to stop this. Travel ball is a business praying on parents thinking they’ll get a scholarship or go pro. The UCL/elbow in general can’t handle the volume and will eventually fail. The strain on a UCL in pitching is significant. Younger baseball players place most strain on their elbows as they throw too much with their arm and not with their body. The more mature a baseball player and better their form, less strain on UCL. In many cases,travel sports are taking fun of sports away and childhoods that can’t be relived while increasing risk of injury. Let’s return to the Sandlot.

@mjcatc @mnhopper1s @NFHS_Org I’m a member of Minnesota’s SMAC and it is highly recommended. I know of one small school in our area that is fielding a girls flag football team this spring, allowing girls to double up with track & softball. So far they have not reached out to us for coverage as of yet.

I see that @NFHS_Org and various state orgs are all in on adding girls flag football as a high school sport. What are these orgs and their SMACs doing to address medical care for this additional sport? I see many ATs getting this dropped on them with no consideration for other 1/

@MSHSLjohn Thank you John, for all that you have done throughout your career to highlight high school sports in Minnesota. Thank you especially for making the stories from Caledonia and East Grand Forks seem just as important as the stories from Edina and Stillwater.

I'm not retiring until August, but today marks the end of my final winter season in my role with the MSHSL. I've been writing throughout the day, trying to paint a picture of what these events are like, and I'm at more 1,500 words. I'll plan to post a finished product tomorrow.

@MSHSLjohn As much as hockey is celebrated and rightfully so, I agree with you in that few events bring the level of pure intensity that the state wrestling tournament brings.

I'm not convinced that there's an atmosphere in Minnesota high school sports that's better than the championship round of the state wrestling tournament.
