High blood pressure, once seen as a problem for late middle age, is now alarmingly common among teenagers and is negatively impacting brain function and cognition. A recent study involving 116 teenage boys and girls revealed a concerning trend: over half of the participants were either prehypertensive or had stage 1 or 2 hypertension. The consequences are significant. These teenagers not only had elevated blood pressure but also arterial stiffness, which was linked to poorer overall cognitive performance, slower reaction times, and diminished accuracy in working memory tasks. The message is clear: physical activity and maintaining a healthy body fat percentage are not just about looking good—they are essential for keeping blood pressure in check. This, in turn, supports optimal brain health and cognitive function at every stage of life. Maintaining these healthy habits is crucial for supporting neural circuits involved in attention, memory, and executive function, which are all critical for academic and life success. So, prioritize regular exercise and maintaining a healthy body fat percentage to safeguard both your brain and body. And remember, start early!
