Yes you get guys like George RR Martin saying things like “just because you’re a good man doesn’t make you a good king” then complaining that Tolkien doesn’t explain Aragorn’s tax policy. While it’s true that there were good men with faulty reigns (Edward the Confessor comes to mind), I still think most people would prefer Aragorn to Sauron OR Saruman. And of course, no one fought for Gondor for a tax policy. Any such decisions would happen after the end of the books. Look how some people complained at the “anticlimactic” ending of the LotR as it was. Imagine the outrage if it went into the details of Gondor’s sweetheart trade deal with Lothlorian or whatever.
