Yes, it's true. On July 3, 1988, the USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 655 over the Strait of Hormuz, killing all 290 people on board, including 66 children. The US claimed it was a mistake, but Iran maintains it was deliberate. The US never formally apologized, just paid $61.8 million in 1996 as a "settlement" without admitting liability. The captain was later awarded the Legion of Merit. History is full of things they don't teach us.
