It's crazy that Dwayne Johnson was once worth $7. Now he's starring in another guaranteed billion dollar movie. The live-action Moana trailer dropped today. Johnson is back as Maui, but I'm more fascinating by Johnson's unique approach to his brand over 30 years. In 1995, Johnson was cut from the Canadian Football League. He moved back in with his parents with $7 to his name. He pivoted to professional wrestling. Within four years, The Rock was the biggest name in the industry. He headlined WrestleMania, sold out arenas worldwide and became the centerpiece of wrestling's most profitable era. Then he put that brand on a new surface: film. His movies have grossed over $11 billion worldwide. Fast and Furious, Jumanji, Moana, Jungle Cruise, San Andreas, Central Intelligence. Seven Bucks Productions, the company he named after the $7 he started with, has generated $4.6 billion at the box office. Then another surface: consumer products. Teremana tequila launched in 2020 and became the fastest-growing spirits brand in the United States, passing one million cases sold annually in just three years. That was a first for any premium spirit across all categories. The brand is now valued at $3.5 billion. Then Project Rock with Under Armour. ZOA energy drinks. A $30 million board seat at TKO Group Holdings, the WWE and UFC parent company. 391 million Instagram followers, the most of any American man on the platform. One brand. Built once in a wrestling ring. Now generating revenue across film, streaming, spirits, energy drinks, fitness apparel, corporate boards and a live-action Disney remake. Each new surface amplified the existing ones. None of them required starting from scratch because the underlying asset, the brand authority, was already built. This is exactly what is happening with the businesses that are winning in search and AI visibility right now.
