GH₵153.2M as tax 😳: KGL Group settles GH₵153.2M tax bill, boosting national revenue KGL Group has paid GH₵153.2 million to the Ghana Revenue Authority in full settlement of its tax obligations. The payment is expected to significantly support the country’s revenue mobilization efforts. If the govt is receiving just this much tax from one person then I can imagine how much revenue Ghana gets from tax. Billions perhaps.

@BBSimons Being a policy analyst doesn’t mean you have to be against everything. There are times where you’ve got to agree and times to disagree. In as much as I do admire your daring approach, I have never actually seen you highlighting and shining spotlight on good policy initiatives.

I was on Newsfile today on Joy TV. 1. Based on the non-stop feedback I am receiving, I think that this is a good opportunity to get more people to appreciate the way we policy analysts see the world. 2. I have put together this piece to illustrate how things that look simple and are easily bundled together to create a seamless and politically convenient narrative often turn out to be highly problematic in the world of policy. 3. Some of the conversations I found stimulating on the show are summarised immediately below as well. A. If, instead of using coherent policies and strategies, we simply bend the rules to benefit specific individuals due to their regulatory influence, we may end up creating a few successful entrepreneurs, but no broad-based intergenerational success stories. B. If Ghana wants to help its entrepreneurs own more of the country’s natural resources, the policies and laws should be calibrated to ensure that more Ghanaians undertake more high-calibre exploration to find big greenfield assets. C. How come the economic nationalism argument only comes up when powerful Ghanaian actors are contending with foreign companies about mines that those foreign companies have discovered and developed? We saw the same situation in the Black Volta affair and now in the Damang saga. D. Another reason why I am not too sure about the indigenisation logic is the fact that so far it is foreign companies from relatively weaker (geopolitically speaking) countries like Australia and South Africa that have lost their mining opportunities. E. One cannot avoid the unfortunate impression that Gold Fields, for instance, has been placed between a rock and a hard place, pun intended. It is fighting claims of nearly $740 million from a powerful mining boss who is poised to take over one of their two mines and needs roughly the same amount to develop that mine at the same time as Gold Fields' lease/development agreement for the larger mine is up for renewal in just over a year. F. For those of leftist/socialist persuasion who support economic nationalism, I wonder if they think Gold Fields is a fair target. Of the world’s five major gold mining companies, it is the only one that has an African government – South Africa, through its public pensions fund – as the largest shareholder. I thought pan-Africanism was a thing? 4. Hope there is someone out there curious about the world of policy who would find something useful amidst all the meandering text! If you are a career auditor in the auditor service of Ghana, this appointment must really be frustrating. You will pursue high education, attain the necessary qualifications, in addition to years of auditing the state. Then boom! An outsider is brought to head your department.

It is unfortunate that the UN Security Council has once again failed to demonstrate effectiveness and act decisively in the face of such a global threat as the Iranian regime's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. No one should be allowed to block such globally significant sea lanes or undermine the security of dozens of nations through terrorist attacks against the freedom of navigation. We faced a similar challenge in the Black Sea when the Russians attempted to block our ports and civilian shipping—Russia was trying to suffocate our economy. And we found a way to solve that problem through decisive action, not inaction. Now, we see a similar problem on a global scale. The Strait of Hormuz must remain open to all vessels that sustain vital economy lifelines and maintain normal international trade. Countries in the region have spoken clearly on this, and we support the aspirations of the people of the Middle East and the Gulf for peace. Peace and security in this region directly impact stability, market predictability, and the cost of living in every single country. Such problems and this war must not be prolonged. The world needs a functional UNSC that acts more decisively to resolve acute security challenges of global magnitude.

I didn’t know Ghana has the equivalent of the CIA, Mossad, or KGB. It’s called the Research Department, which operates outside the country. I wish I could know more about them: if they kill, undertake espionage, and have advanced technology.
