@clarabellumsart yeah 100% it's really sad when people are that way because I LOVE TO YAP! We're all at a convention for our shared interests, it's ok if someone doesn't wanna talk with me but my favorite times vending are when me and a stranger become besties squeeing over our mutual interests

while we're on the subject of AA discourse lol i'm sorry but as a vendor i always get a little upset when those 'would customers prefer to be left alone when they shop' and the answer is always 'yes please be quiet' like girl im a human being not an order kiosk... can i speak

I won an LA28 Olympics lottery spot and like girl… are we fr with these prices I can’t even get the venue that’s closest to me for under $600 a ticket and surfing was sold out before I got in 😭 😭 😭

1/ I won a lottery slot in the LA Olympics pre-sale for residents that opened last week & I’ll say this: the city should never have spent a single taxpayer dollar on this greed machine. Average ticket prices are around $500 for lower-demand prelims, $800–$1,000 for finals.

In the midst of all this AA discussion I want to give this perspective as a con staffer: AA competition is insane, even for the smallest of events. You would genuinely have an easier time getting into med school than accepted into a lot of AAs. (cont.)

I can tell you all that if my main priority was just making a ton of money, I would not be doing conventions and designing original stuff lol

I can't even fathom the level of gaslighting it takes to believe that artists making acrylic merch is in any way comparable to multi-billion dollar corporations' effect on the environment. we drink out of paper straws while billionaires private jet across the street

*long unstructured ramble incoming* FWIW, my sales have been in the green for AA and have a handful booked for the rest of the year BUT AA income is not enough to support me and my whole family. I work a full time art job, juggle 3-5 freelance gigs, try to manage an ecomm shop, and am trying to make a future for Space Maria all while being a father of 3 and husband of one. I have a tremendous amount of respect for AA who can fully support their craft from AA income alone. AA first and foremost is a business investment = spending money to make money. It's not free. It's not easy. It takes literal thousands of dollars and months of planning to make these events possible. It's full of stress, long nights, no sleep, and lots of scheduling. We do ALL of this to share our passion with others at niche events with people that hopefully share that same love of art as yourself. We get to nerd out about video games, anime, comics, and other artists we idolize. Being able to share your art with others is priceless. Artists are incredibly vulnerable people especially in-person at events. Our greatest fear isn't going financially in the red, it's having people come up to your table and tell you that your art is ass. The first thing we think about when sales are down is not the money, it's "Am I just bad? Do people not like my art? Why did I do this? What am I doing wrong?" There's no easy street as an artist and hasn't been since I started doing it 30+ years ago. There's no golden ticket to carry all of your financial burdens as an artist. It's a constant grind and hustle to ensure you and your family are covered. Art was only possible bc of the 10+ years I put into the restaurant industry bc it funded my passion. Full time restaurant while moonlighting the art grind. You have to make things work and evolve and adapt constantly. Especially in the incredibly fickle art/animation/gaming industries. So if something isn't working for you as an artist or sales arent hitting what you need, what are YOU doing to try and adapt to the situation? You have to evolve and adapt especially in a creative industry. Artist alleys are fun bc you meet and talk to so many amazing people face to face. You meet other artists and create a camaraderie with them bc we know all too well the emotional and mental toll it takes to put yourself out there like that. Art is hard. Art hustle is harder. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hotel: $800-1200+ Flights: $300-500+ round-trip Ubers: $100-200+ Food: $200 Table: $100-300+ Merch cost per item sold: ~20% Income tax: ??% Attending any con, not including sitting at the table for ~24 hours, costs around $1500-2400. Each time you see me post a table, its gamble.

Anime Boston expenses = $6500 Between flights, hotel, Uber, production costs etc If I don't hit 9K in sales then the month of work to payoff 2K of rent isn't worth it I wanna make art to make people feel something but Artist alley life is survival struggle bus
