The UK TV industry is facing a ‘perfect storm’ that threatens the future of British storytelling, warns Elisabeth Murdoch. With broadcasters focusing on dramas with international appeal, British stories from all corners of the UK are struggling to be told. Many experienced producers are now taking on jobs like shelf-stacking and pub work to make ends meet.
Murdoch highlighted how rising production costs, declining ad revenues, and falling BBC licence fee income have worsened the crisis. While global platforms invest in UK-based productions, they often lack the uniquely British perspective that public service broadcasters provide.
Some are calling for tax breaks or levies on streamers to fund local content, but confidence in the industry remains low. With fewer risks being taken, shows like Happy Valley, Fleabag, and Skins may become harder to make.
