Self-made millionaire Harris Rosen adopted a Florida neighborhood called Tangelo Park, significantly decreased the crime rate, and increased the high school graduation rate from 25% to 100% by providing free daycare and scholarships to all high school graduates

Brain dumps are a great way to do retrieval practice! Today, we did a brain dump on heat islands. I wrote an essential question on the board and students responded by writing down everything they knew about the topic without looking at their notes.

@MrZachG In my own teacher prep, it was always emphasized that teaching only occurred if learning also occurred. If they hadn't learned it, I had not actually taught it. I may have "covered" it or talked about it, but for it to have been teaching, there had to be learning.

I love this graphic from my colleague Harriet Janetos. It reminds us that word reading starts with decoding, may require a pronunciation adjustment to match a word in our oral language vocabulary, and is CONFIRMED by context. A welcome diversion from three-cueing.

@PamelaSnow2 NOBODY questions the value of reps in becoming skilled in sports. NOBODY wonders if practice is important when learning to play a musical instrument. Why, when the same principles are applied to acquiring academic skills, does it become "drill and kill"?

Jason Kennedy | Stop Teaching & Design Learning!
Make Tier 1 the priority Make Tier 1 the priority Make Tier 1 the priority Tiers 2 & 3 are a direct reflection of how effective your Tier 1 is. Design Tier 1 so that it's all it should be for learners & teachers. It's the only way things change to benefit everyone.

Fun night in class as we collaborated on analyzing assessments. We even had some discussions about the importance of paying attention to students' reading behaviors - thank you, @ReadingRockets & Linda Farrell for having such amazing resources to ground these conversations in!

@thismomloves @amandavande1 @IDA_Ontario Understanding when explicit instruction is essential and when you might effectively use other approaches is fundamental to good teaching. This table came from an article I co-authored almost three decades ago, and I think it's still relevant...
