I asked: "Why didn't you donate the stock?" He didn't know he could. If he donates appreciated stock directly to the church: He gets a deduction for the full fair market value. He pays zero capital gains tax on the gain. The church pays zero tax. They sell it themselves. By writing a check instead, he'll eventually sell that stock, pay capital gains, and give from what's left. The difference over time on a large position could be $100K or more in unnecessary taxes.
