As part of ongoing efforts to engage and inspire the next generation of professionals, Youth in Business South Africa hosted a focused session with Michelle Phillips, Group Chief Executive of Transnet. The engagement provided a platform to share insights on leadership, operational priorities, and the organisation’s path to recovery. Opening the conversation, Phillips reflected on her own journey, joining Transnet in 1999 as a young law graduate with ambition and determination. Her story set the tone for a powerful message: opportunity matters, and it must be intentionally created. Drawing from personal experience, she emphasised the importance of investing in young talent. Transnet continues to commit millions towards youth development initiatives, reinforcing its belief that empowering skilled young people is key to building a resilient future. The discussion turned to Transnet’s widely followed recovery journey. Phillips outlined the tangible steps being taken to restore operational strength and improve performance. Central to this progress is meaningful collaboration with customers, funders, labour unions, and employees, all working together to drive a sustainable turnaround. Beyond strategy, Phillips shared the values that guide her leadership: transparency, integrity, honesty, and a strong work ethic. She encouraged attendees to embrace these principles and to pursue success with discipline, without expecting shortcuts or handouts. She was joined by Vuledzani Nemukula, Group Chief Procurement Officer, who is leading the digitisation of Transnet’s procurement processes, an important step in modernising the organisation and enhancing efficiency. The session left attendees not only informed but inspired, equipped with both insight and a renewed sense of purpose. #TransnetCares #YouthInBusinessSA #YouthDevelopment #FutureLeaders #EconomicGrowth
