an important piece on how Dalit women sarpanches relentlessly face and fight caste discrimination while carrying out the daunting task of governing and fearlessly standing up for people's rights.
Johanna Deeksha@Johanna_Deeksha

The women panchayat presidents I met were highly ambitious and passionate about their jobs. They took over the post with a lot of big dreams to serve their communities and others, but systemic caste discrimination prevents them from it. scroll.in/article/105464…

Whether in parliaments or village councils here at home or globally, violence against women in politics continues unchecked and unabated, leaving women leaders exhausted and, in some cases forcing them to leave.
Helen Clark@HelenClarkNZ

Shocked to see another senior #woman leader driven out of politics by hateful elements in society. @SigridKaag brought huge experience to her roles as #Netherlands 🇳🇱 Deputy PM & @D66 leader. #Women politicians globally are targeted disproporionately: english.elpais.com/international/…

The Caseworker’s Dictionary of Violence introduces a vocabulary around gender-based violence (GBV) that emerges from the grassroots, from those at the frontlines, within a deeply Indian context. Join us in building it. thethirdeyeportal.in/the-learning-l…

Replugging the essay that documents stories of Dalit and Adivasi woman panchayat leaders encountering and fighting caste and gender discrimination, and yet continue to leverage public office to secure rights, entitlements and justice for marginalised communities.
The Hunger Project@THP_Ind

@HungerProject Back to the roots, Dalit and Adivasi elected women representatives who are constantly fighting a system that perpetuates violence and inequality #confront the nasty politics of caste and gender in the village councils. #EndGBV #EndVAWP #electedtolead thehungerprojectindia.exposure.co/when-violence-…

Dalit women sarpanches/ward members work under tremendous pressure once elected to office. Everyday they confront deeply ingrained discriminatory attitudes 'cause of their gender & caste. They often work with meagre resources/support & still have the phenomenal will to continue.

The caste of a chair: how chairs serve as symbols of the discrimination that Dalit women panchayat presidents face after being elected to office. @Johanna_Deeksha reports for Common Ground: scroll.in/article/105464…

reduced govt. spending on social protection schemes like MGNREGA, PDS, anganwadis, ICDS etc., is doing the opp. of addressing hunger/poverty levels exacerbated by the pandemic. we MUST do more to ENSURE people can live with DIGNITY. basic RIGHTS of the vulnerable must be SECURED.

The union budget 2023 is completely unresponsive to the needs of the majority of the people who are still struggling to earn a decent livelihood and is biased towards reviving the economy for the big corporates. @PMOIndia @nsitharaman @PiyushGoyalOffc @MoRD_GoI

For Sabita Nayak (ward member, Bastriguda GP, Odisha), for instance, MGNREGS has been like oxygen. "Working at a village road construction site paid me and my husband Rs 298/day" (a critical bump from Rs 207 introduced by the state govt as part of the special package in 2020).

speaking to our elected women representatives in panchayats who also toil the soil in agriculture fields, build anganwadi centres, check dams, roads and toilets, etc., we learned:

The Supreme Court has violated constitutional prohibitions barring discrimination by excluding economically disadvantaged SC/ST/OBC people while preserving the EWS quota (on the pretext that they have received benefits) devaluing the fundamental principles of social justice. #EWS
