I have buried friends who didn’t get to grow old. I have held people as they wept after losing their jobs, their families, their homes, in hospitals, not because they did anything wrong, but because someone found out who they truly were. I have sat with a young man, barely 19, who hadn’t eaten in three days because his mother locked the door and slid his belongings out through the window like he was already a stranger. We are not strangers. We are your brothers, your sisters, your children, your neighbors. We grew up in the same red soil. We prayed in the same churches. We sang the same national anthem with the same pride. But somewhere, something decided that our love made us less than human. I do this work because if I don’t, who will? I carry other people’s pain because mine alone is already too heavy and yet somehow, sharing it makes it lighter. That is the strange, beautiful cruelty of this life that even in suffering, we find each other. I am only asking you to remember that behind every number, every statistic, every headline there is a person. A person who laughs too loud at bad jokes. A person who calls their grandmother every Sunday. A person who still believes, somehow, that tomorrow might be kinder. I am that person. And I am still here. LGBTQ RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS 🏳️‍🌈
