@Sh3baSpaniel The problem with 1923-1929 Bukharin is that it is really hard (if not impossible) to separate him from Stalin. They were essentially aligned on all of the worst elements of Soviet politics at the time (SIOC, approach to internal opposition, asinine economic policy).

@TheSpaceSoviet Ik Bukharin was an ally to Stalin until Stalin had him killed but I wonder if Stalin wasnt around could he have been better? Ik he wasnt really good at intra-party politics and a supporter of the NEP but I dont remember any issues beyond that and his allaince with stalin.

I refuse to recognise or celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 because the date was originally selected by Vladimir Lenin to mark a communist holiday. I respect women, and celebrate and appreciate women all the time - in fact I often make tea and dinner for the women I love in my life. But I will NEVER recognise International Women's Day on a day selected by Vladimir Lenin. @FurioserK Fair, can't speak without being there. For what its worth, I enjoy most of Warsaw's avenues as a pedestrian (though I can't speak of biking). Maybe if I can visit East Germany I could have a more informed opinion.

@TheSpaceSoviet Well, they are pretty bad. They're ass to traverse on foot or on bike, speaking from personal experience here. I also meant the St.-Petersburger Straße in Dresden, not Carolastraße. Probably mixed it up because the (now former) Carolabrücke connects it with Carolaplatz.

@sunmihoe @horizonpilgrim Ok, but this is straight up not true. The common areas in socialist realist parts of Warsaw are generally full of people (can't speak of Nowa Huta [which is in the photo] since I was only there as a tourist). The modernist districts aren't really that bad either.

@TheSpaceSoviet @horizonpilgrim No, you can't agree to disagree. This is simply bad urbanism. The public space has no human scale and is effectively dead and empty most of the time. This urbanism isn't even exclusive to the socialist period. It was also done in Western Europe and it was largely a failure

@FurioserK From the photos, those smaller avenues don'tseem as bad. Of course in some cases you could make them more narrow, but the idea of routing trams, necessary car traffic, buses, etc. through a handful of arterial avenues is reasonable.

@TheSpaceSoviet Yes and the Karl-Marx-Allee was used as a model for development elsewhere in the DDR. You have the Brückenstraße and Straße der Nationen in Chemnitz, Carolastraße in Dresden, Breiter Weg in Magdeburg, etc. that all look and work like this, albeit on a smaller scale.
