Motivation is good, but discipline is better psyche.co/notes-to-self/… My latest Note to Self for Psyche magazine features the amazing @usykaa The boxing champ's recent claim that ‘discipline is better than motivation’ was psychologically astute

In our new study (with @TimJRees), we show that genetically predicted memory capacity is independently associated with self-reported foreign language proficiency in both children and adults. More memory-enhancing alleles = better language skills. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40428411/

"kids who thought going to university to learn coding may be in trouble now?... YES" Nobel Laureate, Geoffrey Hinton: AI tutors could outperform humans by using data to pinpoint misunderstandings. it will make universities less necessary for undergraduate learning, but vital for research training.

@TimJRees @karun1710 @Arsenal This is one of the similar projects I was talking about the other day, kinda similar project like the post-doc opportunity in our uni. The uni one is a general one, but this one from Arsenal is football focused. Foundational model.

Very excited to share our new preprint! 📢 We investigated how often researchers misinterpret statistically nonsignificant results as the absence of an effect. Spoiler: it’s a lot (~81% of 599 articles)! Dive into our findings and their implications here: osf.io/preprints/psya…

Very excited to see this: a National Geographic documentary about one of the biggest frauds in social science—the Stanford Prison Experiment. Based on all the new evidence. Thibault Le Texier in particular deserves major credit for his work uncovering the truth.

I was heavily tested and challenged at the outset of one interview, but felt confident, experienced, and well-enough prepared to ride that initial storm, and ended up with great data

Interviewees can be very "no nonsense" and unforgiving. I was interviewing people I'd seen on tv at Olympic Games, and was now asking about very personal aspects of their lives

@andykirkland71 - I think you are referring to Dan's interviewing? I'd agree. I'm always impressed at the skill of interviewers. But as an aside, when UKS set up the project, they advertised for PHDs to conduct the GBM project . . .

@TimJRees @TimJRees I have just used it as an exemplar in a 'Research Methods' module, exploring the importance of expertise/understanding of the topic to conduct good interviews. Also helps me in 'Case Formulation' as a way to understand lifecourse & complexity.
