Men do not understand the quiet terror of being a woman alone in a city. We often feel scared just to walk down the street or ride a train.

Male ugliness might not be as real a category as people think. I used to find men largely unattractive, and even my man felt unattractive to me in the beginning. I was probably too focused on his looks and found him a little strange, but over time I fell for him, and now I think he is the most beautiful man alive. Attractiveness is real, but it manifests in far stranger ways than people admit. A person can be extremely conventionally attractive and still evoke nothing in you. Attraction is often less about surfaces than about who makes you feel at home, who carries the qualities of a good father to your children, and whether you allow your perception enough openness to discover what first glance cannot.
