In 86/87 I was absolutely trying to make stuff like Arthur Baker, AON, Mantronik & Marley. But I've never once gone into a song thinking "Let me replicate Premier / Pete Rock / Dilla". I'm too preoccupied trying to make the sound in the speakers reflect the sound in my own head.

Some might be aghast at no Premier; he's on the cusp, as I enjoyed his 89 GangStarr work, but he didn't really ping my radar until 91's "Step In The Arena". An inspiration, not an influence. He's a contemporary; which sounds like a boast, but it's not - it's just how time works.

Audible narrator Meghan Kelly has a particularly distinctive intonation style, which is oddly evocative of Michael Conner Humphreys as young Forrest in "Forrest Gump". It's so distracting I can't possibly enjoy whatever she reads. Check out the samples:

For anyone who's never actually visited Boston's 22-foot 20-ton tribute to Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King: the sculpture is also surrounded by 69 plaques honoring local civil rights activists of the 1950s-1970s, including the parents of Keith Elam, Guru of Gang Starr.
