Did you know that the song Mandy, Barry Manilow's break out hit single, wasn't originally called Mandy? This was the original recording in 1971. Manilow actually covered it as it was initially recorded - as a more up-tempo version like the original. Clive Davis, head of Arista Records didn't like the version. They had already made the name change from Brandy to Mandy to try to eliminate the confusion with another released song called Brandy, (You're a fine Girl), by Looking Glass and so they continue to hope to make the song into a hit. Manilow took the song back to the piano, slowed the song into a ballad. The rest as they say is history. It then became the song that launched him into stardom!
