Even though we know that students spend a considerable amount of time on a computer/device outside of school, Kesler et al. (2014) note "popular culture texts and CML are not regular parts of literacy instruction in classrooms".

Kesler et al. (2014) explain the role schools play in teaching critical media literacy: "By analyzing how these texts construct readers and what these texts are doing and for what purposes, students could gain power over how to situate themselves as they interact with them".

Saunders et al. (2017) stress the importance of teaching ss to critically analyze text and media. Ts must normalize the practice of using social media outlets in the classroom in order to encourage a critical media lens.

Kohnen and Saul (2018) state that in districts they have observed, "Reading passages are selected based on Lexile scores or curricular fit, rarely on ss interest". Giving students voice and choice in their reading is the key to engagement in the classroom

"These classics fail to reach our students, whether in the suburbs, cities, or rural areas, if we teachers do not help them uncover the connections to their lives" (Johnston 2018). Connecting text to Ss own experiences is crucial for engagement/buy in #literacies

Although Ss prefer reading on digital screens, their performance on comprehension tasks were are significantly higher on printed text- As Ts, how do we bridge this gap between student preference and performance? (Golan, Barzillai, Katzir 2018) #literacies

When it comes to digital vs. print texts in the classroom, it should not be an "either/or but a both/and" (Turner and Hicks 2015). It is important for students to encounter, engage, and evaluate texts through both mediums. #literacies

"Digital text is malleable and can come to us in a variety of forms" (Turner and Hicks 2015). As Teachers we must help students navigate this digital world and use a critical lens when trusting sources. #literacies

Knowing your students is the key to engagement!! Ts should seek out topics and issues that matter to their students & have them experience texts with themes that address those topics and issues. (Brown 2018) #literacies

Students are not just consumers of media, they are active producers. Ts can and should use this in their classrooms, making students active creators in their learning (Bishop & Counihan 2018) #literacies

21st century literacies are not simply about technologies- ELA Ts must prepare students for the world through teaching problem solving, collaboration, & analysis, as well as digital skills (Lankshear 2011) #literacies

The interaction between a reader and the text is not only limited to the reader, text, and poem- Ts now must also consider the "device" and what opportunities it brings to the classroom (Turner & Hicks 2015) #literacies
