@jason_loxton I teach GenChem in a flipped classroom and it’s taken a few iterations, but with online homework due before class & high expectations that they come prepared, it does add a lot of accountability. Not the cure to everything, but worth giving a try if you’re already considering imo

I even give worksheets to complete during class, as few students now take notes. Seems shift in culture of learning/motivation. Considering flipping class next year, but given inconsistent attendance & lack of prep already, seems possible to backfire.

Worst midterm performance this year (across courses) in all years teaching. Pulled old exams (2018, 2019). Way harder. Yet, students performed *better* (w/ fewer supports). Genuinely unsure path forward. Already using 2-stage exams, study guides, quizzes, reflections, free text.

This is tough for me, b/c it's popular to think that "multiple choice doesn't require deep thinking" or "online is an inauthentic way to assess science". But the REALITY is often that other types of assessment result in huge lag times for feedback, and I really dislike that.

If grading isn't manageable, feedback comes too late. And what help is a quiz if students don't get feedback for a week? I'm beginning to prioritize quick feedback above everything else. Which for me, has come to mean: 1⃣ online assessments 2⃣ student-graded quizzes

@Steve_Mang Assigned groups for group work, a number of peer-reviewed assignments, highlighting the expertise of various students in the classroom, encouraging collaborative work via research projects with connected goals. And trying out assigned study groups outside of class this semester!

Asked my P-Chem students about their fave chem class so far and one mentioned an elective I taught because "that is the class in which I became friends with other chemistry majors" 🥲I work really hard to build classroom community so this totally made my day. #AcademicChatter

It's the first day of classes and because I'm starting my 4th year, it means my very first (Covid) freshmen are now seniors and they've been stopping by to say hi and tell me about upcoming interviews and their summer research and wow, I am so dang proud. 🥹#AcademicChatter

Dear Diary: today I asked a question at a very high impact seminar, invited @CarolynBertozzi to karaoke, and then got a fist pump from said Nobel Laureate after singing 'Party in the USA' w/ @annabelly24. Today was wild.

@allisonroessler @jessicakarchCER @EllenYezierski @seerymk Everyone for the GRS should have been told they were accepted or waitlisted. Currently the GRS is full with over 90% of accepted applicants registered. So that likely means no more acceptances unless something unforseen happens. Wish we could accept everyone! Not sure about GRC.

@emilypawley Haha yes! It reminds me of when we were kids we’d sometimes be quiet in the backseat of the car hoping mom or dad would forget to drop us off at daycare before going to work 😅 Told one of my classes and then they would act like they were hoping I’d forget about class.

What that means is that as I start in on the pile, it's not unusual to get a run of multiple papers that really bombed a particular question. Which makes me worry that I made the question unreasonably difficult so that NOBODY will get it right.

I typically grade exam papers with the names hidden, a problem at a time, and in the order in which they were handed in. Which is good for avoiding bias, but does tend to induce mild panic from time to time...

@chemDrV @andrechemist student and it’s so dependent on the amount of effort a student is willing or has the capacity to give. Even with our tiny classes, I still wish I had more time with each student. /2

@chemDrV @andrechemist I love this, Marie! I’m at an institution where classes are capped at 20 students & I work hard to offer individualized support, especially for students I’ve had before. Often they are very successful after getting access to what they need. Even still, it’s hard to help every /1
