Control is expensive. Trust is free. Do the math. Don't throw everybody in jail just because someone abuse it, but deal firmly with those who do.

We have forgotten that «a target is not the target». Performance is not about hitting a given number. What we want is the best possible performance, given the circumstances. How do we know upfront exactly what that number is?

Beyond Budgeting helps getting rid of bad controls in favour of good controls, like for instance transparency. I wouldn't call that losing control!

Performance can’t be managed. You can sow the seeds and nurture the soil, but you can’t make a flower grow by pulling on it. And you don't dig it up once a month to check how it is growing.

Beyond Budgeting started out almost 30 years ago. More popular than ever, but some wonder why it is taking so long. Maybe it should. Concepts growing slowly and steadily are often much more sustainable than short-lived hypes that become fashionable overnight. We have seen a few.

While losing control is a manager’s biggest fear, having control is the biggest illusion. Having next year described with a million budget details might feel comfortable, but “more fiction has been written in Excel than in Word”, as Daniel Pink put it.
