There's a guy on here who spends his time saying we should trust scientists. If people aren't biting your hand off asking for your expertise, maybe your expertise isn't so hot. Never heard of a plumber who goes around trying to persuade people to defer to him about plumbing.

I don't get why people hate Musk for owning $1 trillion in assets. Do they think he's got $1 trillion in his bank account that he refuses to do anything useful with? Is it jealousy? It's really baffling.

A plumber knows more about plumbing than you. A pilot knows more about flying than you. A scientist usually knows more about science than you. That doesn’t make them automatically right. But it does mean the burden of proof is on the person claiming thousands of experts got it wrong. Science isn’t a democracy. It’s not decided by likes, vibes, or confidence. It’s decided by evidence. And evidence doesn’t care who wins the argument.

@caveofjohn @DavidCarrollIr1 The ultra wealthy live by borrowing enormous amounts with their stock as collateral, regardless of it just being a theoretical sum of quantity * last-traded-price. Why banks and other lines of credit do this is beyond my understanding.

Can someone please explain the logic behind capital gains taxes? If there is 3% inflation and you get 3% interest on your already taxed savings, why should you pay a tax on inflation? Does it make any sense to you? Or is it just another left envy wealth confiscation mechanism?

Thank you for summing up why people hate successful people: you think you're a loser because someone else made you a loser. The reason you believe this is that it's a lot more comforting than the truth: you're a loser despite the fact that amazing business leaders like Elon created hundreds of thousands of jobs and paid billions upon billions in taxes. In other words, the reason you're a loser is you, your shitty, envious attitude and the fact that you don't understand that the way to achieve what you want is to provide something other people want so they're willing to pay you for it.

@simonmaechling Sometimes you probably are wrong though. I've been programming computers for nearly 30 years. Sometimes people tell me I'm wrong about some programming topic, and they're right. At university, sometimes an old physicist would mess up an equation, and we students pointed it out.

Spend 20 years studying Chemistry. Collect data. Publish papers. Pass peer review. Earn a PhD. Go online. Get told you're wrong - by an electric screwdriver salesman. That's the internet. Expertise vs confidence. Science isn't broken. Our respect for it is.

What has Elon Musk taken from you? So ask many including Andrew Neil. Here's the answer: He has taken our peace of mind. He has purposefully pushed us apart, divided us further and profited from our loss of community. And that is hard to ever forgive.

Personally I don't care how rich Elon Musk is. I also think the covid vaccines were rubbish and people should never have been made to take them. And I don't think men can turn into women. If anyone wants to disagree, then ... I'm also fine with that.
