ರಾತ್ರಿ 2:40. ನಾನು office ಇಂದ ಮನೆಗೆ bike ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬರ್ತಿದ್ದೆ. ರಸ್ತೆ ಖಾಲಿ. Street lights ಅರ್ಧ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡ್ತಿದ್ದವು, ಅರ್ಧ ಸತ್ತಂತೆ ಕತ್ತಲಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದವು. ಒಂದು flyover ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ, ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಕೈ ತೋರಿಸಿ lift ಕೇಳಿದ. ಅವನ ಮುಖ ಕಾಣ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ತಲೆ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಬಟ್ಟೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಮಣ್ಣು. ನಾನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಬಾರದು ಅಂತ ಅನಿಸಿತು. ಆದರೂ ಏನೋ force ಆದ ಹಾಗೆ bike slow ಆಯ್ತು. ಅವನು ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಹಿಂಬದಿ ಕೂತ. ಆ ಕ್ಷಣ bike ತುಂಬಾ heavy ಆಯ್ತು. ಹಿಂದೆ ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಯಾರೋ ಕೂತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಅನ್ನೋ feel. ನಾನು ಕೇಳಿದೆ, “ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗ್ಬೇಕು?” ಅವನು ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೊತ್ತಿನ ನಂತರ ಅವನ ಕೈ ನನ್ನ ಭುಜದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಂತು. ಕೈ ತುಂಬಾ ಚಳಿ. Ice ತರ. ಅವನು ನನ್ನ ಕಿವಿಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದ— “ನೀನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಜಾಗ ಗೊತ್ತಾ?” ನಾನು ಮಾತಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನು ಹೇಳಿದ— “ನನ್ನ body ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದು ಅದೇ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ.” ನನ್ನ ಕಣ್ಣು mirror ಕಡೆ ಹೋಯ್ತು. Mirror ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂಬದಿ seat ಖಾಲಿ. ಆದರೆ ನನ್ನ ಭುಜದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೈ ಇನ್ನೂ ಇತ್ತು. ನಾನು bike speed ಜಾಸ್ತಿ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಅವನು ನಗಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದ. ನಗು ಅಲ್ಲ. ಒಣ ಎಲುಬುಗಳು ಒಂದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ತಗುಲಿದ ಶಬ್ದದ ಹಾಗೆ. ಮುಂದೆ ರಸ್ತೆ ಮೇಲೆ police barricade ಇತ್ತು. ನಾನು brake ಹಾಕಿದೆ. Bike ನಿಂತಿತು. ಹಿಂದೆ ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡಿದೆ. ಯಾರೂ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ನನ್ನ shirt shoulder ಮೇಲೆ ಐದು ಬೆರಳಿನ ಕಪ್ಪು ಗುರುತು ಇತ್ತು. ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ news ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ತಿಳಿಯಿತು— ಅದೇ flyover ಕೆಳಗೆ ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ accident ಆಗಿತ್ತು. ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ lift ಕೇಳಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾಗ vehicle ಹೊಡೆದು ಸತ್ತಿದ್ದ. News ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನ photo ತೋರಿಸಿದರು. ನಾನು ರಾತ್ರಿ lift ಕೊಟ್ಟವನ ಮುಖ ಅದೇ. ಆ ದಿನದಿಂದ ನಾನು ರಾತ್ರಿ ಯಾರಿಗೂ lift ಕೊಡಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ mirror ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಒಂದು ಧ್ವನಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತೆ— “ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಡು…”

ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆ single floor. ಮೇಲೆ terrace ಮಾತ್ರ. ಯಾರೂ ರಾತ್ರಿ terrace ಗೆ ಹೋಗಲ್ಲ. ಒಂದು ರಾತ್ರಿ 2:15ಕ್ಕೆ, ಮೇಲಿನಿಂದ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಶಬ್ದ ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು. ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ cat ಇರಬಹುದು ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ತುಂಬಾ slow, heavy. ಯಾರೋ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಹಾಗೆ. ನಾನು ಅಪ್ಪನನ್ನು ಎಬ್ಬಿಸಿದೆ. ಅವರು torch ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು terrace ಗೆ ಹೋದರು. ಮೇಲೆ ಯಾರೂ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಪ್ಪ ಹೇಳಿದರು, “ಏನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ನಿದ್ರೆ ಮಾಡು.” ನಾವು ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬಂದೆವು. ಅಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಶಬ್ದ ಶುರುವಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ. ನಾವು ಮೂವರೂ ಮೇಲೆ ಓಡಿದೆವು. Terrace ಮೇಲೆ ಯಾರೂ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ cement ಮೇಲೆ wet footprints ಇತ್ತು. ಒಂದು ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ, ಎರಡು ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ… ಅವು ನೇರವಾಗಿ terrace ಅಂಚಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದವು. ಮತ್ತು ಅಂಚಿನಿಂದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದವು. ಆದರೆ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಯಾರೂ ಬಿದ್ದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. Footprints ಕೂಡ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಮುಗಿದಿದ್ದವು. ಆ ದಿನದಿಂದ ರಾತ್ರಿ 2 ಗಂಟೆಯ ನಂತರ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೂ ಮೇಲೆ ನೋಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ರಾತ್ರಿ late ಆಗಿತ್ತು. Cab ಸಿಗ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಂದು auto ಬಂತು. Driver ಏನೂ ಮಾತಾಡದೆ ನನ್ನ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ. ನಾನು address ಹೇಳಿದೆ. ಅವನು ತಲೆ ಅಡ್ಡಾಡಿಸಿದ. Auto ಒಳಗೆ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ ವಾಸನೆ. ಹಳೆಯ agarbatti ತರ. Road ಖಾಲಿ. Driver mirror ನಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದರೆ, ಅವನ ಕಣ್ಣು ಮಾತ್ರ ಕಾಣ್ತಿತ್ತು. ನಾನು ಕೇಳಿದೆ, “ಎಷ್ಟು ಆಗುತ್ತೆ?” ಅವನು ಹೇಳಿದ— “ನೀನು ತಲುಪಿದ್ಮೇಲೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತೆ…” ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಭಯ ಆಯ್ತು. ಮನೆ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಬಂದಾಗ ನಾನು cash ತೆಗೆದೆ. Auto ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿತು. ನಾನು ಇಳಿದು ಹಣ ಕೊಡೋಕೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋದೆ. Driver ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. Auto ಕೂಡ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾನು road ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದೆ. ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ app open ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ನಾನು auto book ಮಾಡೇ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ನನ್ನ wallet ಒಳಗೆ ಒಂದು ಹಳೆಯ receipt ಇತ್ತು. ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಬರಿತ್ತಿತ್ತು— “Last ride completed: 2009” ಕೆಳಗೆ driver name ಇತ್ತು. ನಂತರ ಗೊತ್ತಾಯಿತು— ಅದೇ route ನಲ್ಲಿ 2009ರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ auto driver accident ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸತ್ತಿದ್ದ.
