I feel so lucky to have had the chance to write for @nytimes @nytimeswell about how the pandemic/distance learning has pushed elementary school-aged kids into the social media deep end and what parents can do to help their kids navigate this new world. nytimes.com/2020/12/10/wel…

I have a new story out in @UncannyMagazine! "Barbershops of the Floating City" is about family and how far we'll go to relive our favorite memories, and I'm so psyched that it inspired the wonderful cover art by Grace P. Fong for this issue! ✂️ uncannymagazine.com/article/barber…

@liu_angela I've never submitted to the New Yorker. But I am guessing this isn't a form rejection with its "while there is much to admire in this story" -- but yes, rejections are a part of a writer's life. I prefer rejections (form or not) to silence, which also happens :(

Thinking about how my Hotmail short story got this rejection from the New Yorker in 2019 and somehow that stopped me from writing/submitting stories for the next 2+ years.

@virtualjew This is actually gorgeous -- worthy of a spot on MOMA's wall... And also, yum. That sounds delicious.

@GraceLP Awww, hugs. I know what you mean. Everything else seems to pale into trivialities when there’s so much suffering in the world right now. But I also think the world still needs stories, needs light, however dimly it may seem to shine in the backdrop of so much darkness.

@broadwaybabyto I mask, and I really believe in masking (although I don’t make my middle school age children do it since their classmates don’t) and even I feel the need to qualify/justify why I do it (eg, I see my aged parents often) because it feels awkward.

If you want masks in healthcare, wish your HCWs would mask and/or have delayed or avoided care due to COVID risk - drop me a comment or a wave? I’m working on an article that will be a plea to all the unmasked healthcare workers - and I want to show there’s a need here!

@lolaannamendez Yup, same. Freelancing has really dried up for me :( And I'm experiencing pitch fatigue -- I'm sure editors I'm pitching are experiencing it too from the other side... Wondering if it's time to throw in the towel...

I have absolutely zero deadlines. I'm sending out loads of pitches and follow ups. It's bleak out there! I'm open for assignments.

@TiaTashiro Gorgeous story, and difficult - but in all the best ways good stories always are. You're fast becoming a writer whose stories I'll read without question, as soon as they come out. Congrats!!

@leverus My references are a bit dated, but I was obsessed with the Belgariad series by David Eddings and the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander when I was 12.

My younger son (12) isn't much of a reader. He craves Roblox, Youtube Shorts, Fortnite, anything but a book. So I gave him the most brutally addictive novel I could think of, ENDER'S GAME ... and it's working. I think. But I can't think what to give him next. Suggestions?

@liu_angela We are in such a product-oriented, hustle culture that this is an important lesson to learn! Of course, I have many false starts and no product as far as stories go, so that’s probably no good either.

One thing I’ve been trying to relearn: you don’t need to finish every story you start. It’s important to just explore, to get stuck, and to move on. Not everything needs to be done to have meaning.

@_hh_pak @clarkesworld Gorgeous - and I loved the specificity of the food descriptions. And as a mom of still-littles, this really hit hard.

Started with four kids, left with four kids. Solo traveling mom success! (Dad didn’t have PTO so his gift is a quiet house for a few days ❤️❤️) They are every bit as wowed as I hoped ❤️ #niagarafallsusa @NiagaraFallsUSA

My 10yo told me that rich people and poor people do bad things, but rich people don’t have to go to jail usually, and poor people do. I was at least 15 years older than her when I began to see things this clearly.
