I’m very doubtful you remember the 70s. By 79 we had interest rates as high as 15%. Gas prices were $4.60 (they’re 3.90 now). Odd-even rationing (you could only buy gas on certain days based on license plate). Stations running out of fuel mid-day. 4–6 hour waits at peak panic moments (especially summer 1979). In the US by 1979 we imported 50% of our oil. Today we’re a net exporter of gasoline.

People keep comparing this to the 1970s oil shock. The 70s took a decade to fully play out. One month in, and we already have: fuel rationing across Asia, crude at above $100, the Strait of Hormuz closed, … This is way worse.

The backlash to the clips was swift and widespread, with many Americans demanding to know why their tax dollars are being used for a partisan military stunt involving such a repulsive celebrity. This is the same Republican Party that refuses to fund healthcare, child care, or basic social services. There's no money to make your life even a little bit easier, but there's money to burn through helicopter fuel for Kid Rock. I’ve been in Congress through divided governments, bitter fights, and historic crises. I’ve never seen anything like the last 24 hours. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson killed Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s bipartisan deal to fund the TSA, Coast Guard, and FEMA.  It was a deal that had the support of Senate Republicans and Democrats alike, 100-0! Why? Because Johnson places his own political survival and fealty to Trump over all else, including long waits at airports or anything else. We could have passed it in the House easily if only Johnson had allowed the vote to proceed. But instead he blew up the whole thing. Where this goes next is anyone’s guess, but what’s very clear is that Johnson is the worst and most subservient speaker in modern American history.

In January, Trump signed Executive Order 14380, placing harsh tariffs on any country caught "directly or indirectly" supplying oil to Cuba. In February, when a Greek flagged tanker tried to bring 80,000 barrels from Colombia to Cuba, the US Coast Guard intercepted it, forcing the ship to sail to the Dominican Republic. In March, when the US sought to stabilize oil prices after starting a war with Iran, OFAC issued waivers for Russian crude. As Russian tankers approached the island, the US placed Cuba on a tiny list of countries it said were *still* not allowed to buy Russian oil. Two ships which were en route changed course under pressure. If we had actual journalists, instead of the brainless morons seen smiling and nodding below, they would have pointed this out to Rubio.
