My home country is playing in this World Cup. Since day one, I wasn't sure how I'd feel watching their matches vs. watching US matches. I thought I'd have the same feelings about both teams. Gosh was I so wrong! Listening to the national anthem of my home country stirred no feelings whatsoever in me. Watching the team score or win was nice, but it felt like watching any other team scoring or winning. There was nothing special about it. Listening to the US national anthem brought all the feelings, goosebumps, smiles, and even tears. Engaging with every play of the US team, screaming with every missed goal or a wrong referee decision, jumping with every goal was the most natural thing to do. Two weeks in and I can confidently say my allegiance, my sense of belonging, my pride, and my joy is for one country: USA.
