Every generation was a visible leap you could see with your eyes in a single photo. Then from 2015 to 2022, seven years, the main sensor stayed at 12MP. Seven iPhones in a row. The jumps moved from hardware you could see to software you couldn't: computational photography, Smart HDR, Night Mode, Deep Fusion. Each one made the photos meaningfully better, but in a way that's invisible in a side-by-side comparison video. iPhone 14 Pro finally moved to 48MP in 2022. And now iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, 17 Pro all share that same 48MP main sensor. Three straight generations on the same chip. The first 10 iPhones changed what the camera could physically capture. The last 10 changed how software processes what the same sensor already sees. One of those looks dramatic in an MKBHD comparison video. The other one shows up when you zoom into a shadow at 2am and there's actually detail there. Apple spent the first decade racing megapixels because the gains were obvious.
