Kenya and Ethiopia pushing each other under 2 hours in London. That's what champions do. Sawe 🇰🇪 edges Kejelcha 🇪🇹, but both made history together. Congratulations!

WHAT HAVE WE JUST WITNESSED? 🤯 Sabastian Sawe has just become the first person in history to run a sub two-hour marathon in race conditions. Yomif Kejelcha was also under two hours for second!

Congratulations to #Algeria on eliminating trachoma, the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide.
Twenty-nine countries globally, including 10 in @WHOAFRO, now have achieved this significant milestone.
This progress demonstrates what can be achieved through sustained political commitment and the dedicated leadership of health professionals on the ground. Together, we can accelerate the elimination of neglected tropical diseases and advance a healthier, more resilient future for all.

The annual @WHO Results Report 2025 shows that with support from the World Health Organization and partners, countries have delivered tangible health benefits for millions of people:
- An estimated 567 million additional people were covered by essential health services without experiencing catastrophic health spending;
* 698 million additional people were better protected from health emergencies in 2025; and
- 1.75 billion additional people living healthier lives in 2025.
These gains cannot be taken for granted. Protecting and expanding them will require sustained support and investment, so that together we can continue advancing the vision set out in WHO’s Constitution: the highest attainable standard of health as a right for all.

Over 100 million vaccine doses have been delivered to an estimated 18.3 million children aged 1 to 5 across 36 countries through the Big Catch-Up campaign since its launch in 2023.
Vaccines protect against more than 30 diseases and even some cancers, including cervical cancer. They have improved infant survival by 40% over the past 50 years and protected tens of millions of children from lifelong disabilities.
On #WorldImmunizationWeek, I call on countries to sustain and expand vaccination coverage at every age, protecting children from dying, safeguarding adolescents’ futures, and supporting longer, healthier lives for older generations.

For centuries, malaria has stolen children from their parents. And stolen health and wealth from communities.
Ending malaria in our lifetime is a real possibility.
On #WorldMalariaDay, I call for governments and partners to expand access to vaccines, next-generation nets and effective medicines to end malaria.

Good meeting with Mr Olzhas Bektenov, Kazakhstan @PrimeMinisterEn, on the country’s health system strengthening and commitment to universal health coverage to advance #HealthForAll Kazakhs.
We discussed Kazakhstan’s efforts to prevent and control noncommunicable diseases, and the importance of reducing tobacco and alcohol use, which are major drivers of cancers, heart and lung diseases.
I commended the Prime Minister on Kazakhstan’s leadership on primary health care expansion in the country and globally.
I committed @WHO’s support to Kazakhstan’s UN centre dedicated to implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, and scaled up use of artificial intelligence for health system delivery.

Good meeting with Dr Asilbek Anvarovich Khudayarov, #Uzbekistan Minister of Health, and his Cabinet and colleagues on the progress of the country’s health system reform to ensure universal health coverage by focusing on primary health care expansion, health workforce development, health insurance strengthening and digital health.
Uzbekistan is also making great progress in cancer control, from early detection of cancer in children and providing all the needed medical and social support, to protecting women’s health through scaling up early detection of breast and cervical cancer.
@WHO is committed to continue supporting the Ministry to deliver on its health sector objectives, including on the ongoing development of Uzbekistan’s 2030 health strategy.

Saw firsthand today key health facilities in the #Kazakhstan capital, Astana, making a great difference in protecting people from cancers and heart diseases.
The National Research Oncology Centre and the University Medical Centre are key pillars in the country’s response to these leading noncommunicable diseases. @WHO is proud to support both facilities, through ongoing technical advice and capacity building exercise.
I was encouraged to see how these centres are training health workers and surgeons across Kazakhstan, throughout Central Asia, and beyond. Such South-South collaboration in health must be scaled up.
I also offered WHO’s readiness to scale up our collaborations and further support their vital work for the health of Kazakhs and people of other nations.

It my honour to meet today with His Excellency, Mr Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kazakhstan.
I congratulated President Tokayev on Kazakhstan’s leadership in staging the Regional Ecological Summit, which brought all regional countries and partners, including @WHO, to Astana to agree ways forward to protect and promote our natural environments, ensure sustainable development and protect the health of millions of people.
I committed @WHO’s ongoing support to address environmental health threats in Kazakhstan and across the Central Asian region, including collaboration with neighbors to address the manmade damage to the Aral and Caspian seas.
I also commended the President on Kazakhstan’s investment in advancing public health, including universal health coverage and expanding its primary health care services.
We also discussed opportunities for joint research in climate and health, digital transformation, and use of artificial intelligence in the healthcare system.
In addition, I was pleased to announce that Kazakhstan’s national regulatory system for medicines and medical devices had successfully achieved WHO’s gold standard Maturity Level 3. This is a recognition of the country’s commitment to #HealthForAll Kazakhs through access and use of safe and effective medical products.

The Aral Sea is a manmade disaster with consequential environmental implications.
At the Regional Ecological Summit #RES2026 in Astana, Kazakhstan, I highlighted that the health of humans, animals and the environment we share are inextricably linked. We cannot protect one without protecting the others.
@WHO has four priorities in this regard:
-Integration of health in environmental policy and recovery efforts;
-stronger cross-border collaboration;
-better monitoring, better data and better use of evidence;
-keep people at the centre especially children, women and communities living in the most affected areas.
