Despite everything, I still like Breath of the Wild in a lot of ways but I don't know how anyone can defend this game from being the death and fundamental changing of the series. I mean if they split Zelda into two different series, modern and classic, sure whatever but I doubt they'll do it or do it right.
The title is itself explains succinctly why this is not a Zelda game. "Breath" of the Wild. AKA ambience. That's what the music is overwhelmingly, if there is music. It's non melodic. It's soundscapes. Ocarina of Time is what really set the foundation for Zelda, and codified many preexisting elements in the series. And look at the title, "Ocarina," a real musical instrument. Ocarina of Time says the world was created by the triune God and that the creation is then typified and sanctified by the Triforce. The Triforce represents the harmony of creation and represents its creators. Zelda's Lullaby is the symbol of this. It's stated, what, a few times?, that Zelda's Lullaby has a "special power" to it, that special power refers to the fact it is an integral part of the creation of the world. In some sense, Zelda's Lullaby is the metaphysical link between God and creation. The world is made like how music is made. This is obviously inspired by the creation story in the Simarillion.
So Breath of the Wild is indeed "Breath of the Wild" all the way through. This is not a game made by accident, put aside whatever sloppiness you may find, the vision of this game is quite coherent. It is a world of circumstance, happenstance, a world without destiny, a world of pittering and pattering, of things to find, but nothing to reveal. To put it more bluntly, it is an atheist world, one without divine harmony, where things happen. The music reflects this. Noodling on instruments, mimicking brainless insects, all that exists is the world and what is seen. The unseen is everywhere in older Zelda games. There is nothing unseen in Breath of the Wild.
Music is the fundamental aspect of the world in previous Zelda games. All the teleport songs in Ocarina of Time are creation songs. The only thing that crosses over into the world of Majora's Mask, besides Link and Skullkid, is music. Music changes the wind, music heals the soul. The Song of Healing in Majora's Mask is the fundamental song of that world, as it represents Link's broken heart.
The design of classic Zelda is musical, beyond the story motifs and sound. It's often criticized, but this is why there's generally a set structure to everything. Not to go into the weeds, but I think Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were by far the best examples of tasteful "dissonance" to the structure to make it far fresher and less rote.
I will concede one great strength of Breath of the Wild, self discovery. That's the actual thesis statement of the game, that's the actual point. The story is ultimately about Link's rediscovery of himself and the world. I hate just about every other part of the story besides this core aspect lol. But anyway, I think this is why the younger generation in particular was so attached to the game as zoomers and now aoomers are the most helicopter parented generation, most locked up jailed up generation ever. The story of Hyrule doesn't really matter, but what matters is Link's adventure through it. I think there's about fifty better ways to do this, but I do like this. I could criticize the rest of the game but do we even need it? We've heard it all before.
Anyway the point is that Zelda fundamentally changed in every single way with Breath of the Wild. I think it's fair to say Breath of the Wild was made out of spite, out of Aonuma wanting a clear cut victory not standing in Miyamoto's shadow and that's why it rejects everything the series was before. I'm not against throwing everything out the window, I'm not even against spite driven design necessarily, but if we cannot say that the series has completely changed then there's no point. Also that classic Zelda is obviously better, even with whatever positives you think Breath of the Wild has.
Oh and Tears of the Kingdom is such a fucking gay shitty game that even apeist specifically intentionally soulless Breath of the Wild starts looking like Lord of the Rings in comparison holy shit fuck Tears of the Kingdom.

Xenogears battle theme music was one of my favorites. If you haven't played this game, you truly missed out!

TOYOTARO OFFICIALLY DRAWS OLD MAN GOKU! 🔥
FINALLY IT'S OFFICIALLY CANON.
Toyotaro: "Back in 1989, Toriyama sensei drew an image of an elderly Goku in the Dragon Ball Z Anime Special mook book, joking "When will Dragon Ball end? Goku might end up becoming such an old man"
37 years later… Dragon Ball is STILL not over!
And now Toyotaro has brought that vision to life with a message to Toriyama-sensei himself:
"The day we see Goku in this form may actually come!"
We are SO here for Old Man Goku. The dream is alive.
